DM PLANT OPERATION

NEED FOR DM PLANT

Composition of raw water differ from
source to source
Mainly three types of impurities
available in water
1. Gases Co2, O2
2. Suspended solids turbidity, organic
matters
3. Dissolved solids salts of
Ca,Na,Mg,Al,Fe,Cl
For use as feed water in boiler these
are to be removed as they get
deposited in heat transfer zone there
by restricting heat transfer and may
lead to corrosion also.

DM PLANT SPECIFICATION
The capacity of DM plant is 5.6 m3/hr
* 2 streams.
SAC and SBA are designed for
operation of 20 hrs and MB designed
for 140 hrs
DUAL MEDIA FILTER
Used for removal of suspended
solids, turbidity
Raw water passed through the DMF
contains fine sand reinforced by
marbled and gravels.
Outlet parameter 0.5 NTU
Backwash carried out after 20 hours
of operation
ACTIVATED CARBON FILTER
Used for removing organic
constituents and FRC in water supplies
It protects ion exchange resins from
possible damage due to oxidation or
organic fouling
Water from ACF outlet has no chlorine.
still contains dissolved cations and
anions
These removed by ion exchange
ION EXCHANGE
The ion exchange process take place
as hard water passes through the
softening material called resins
Resins are organic substance
consists of matrix and functional
group.
Functional group are responsible for
ion exchange
STRONG ACID CATION
The SAC resins HAVE -SO3 H
(sulphonic acid) group as exchange
sites
The SAC resins can convert nearly all
Positive salts corresponding acid

Capacity 900 litres- resin type: C20

During service
Ca CO3 H2Co3 Ca
RH + Mg CO3 H2Co3 +R Mg
Na SiO2 Sio2, Cl Na
NaCl
During regeneration

Ca CaCl
R Mg + HCL MgCl + R H
Na NaCl
Exhaustion of resins can be monitored
by sodium leakage from bed as Na is
monovalent and start slipping first
Parameter after SAC
pH :2.0 2.5
Conductivity:700 900
Sodium:< 1ppm
PRINCIPAL OF DEGASSER
Thesolubility of gas obeysHenry's
law, that is, the amount of a
dissolved gas in a liquid is
proportional to itspartial pressure.
Therefore, placing a solution under
reduced pressure makes the
dissolved gas less soluble
FUNCTION OF DEGASSER
Carbonic acid is very week acid, it
decompose into H20 & CO2

H2CO3 H2O+CO2
Non functioning of degasser will
increase load on SBA
STRONG BASE ANION
Remove dissociated ions
Strong Base Anion Resins have
quaternaryaminogroups R--NH3OH
Capacity 870 liters- type A101D
Exchanger process
Na2SiO3 SiO3
R OH + NaclR Cl + NaoH
DURING REGENERATION

R SiO3 R OH + Na2SiO3
R Cl +NaOH R OH + NaCl
Exhaustion of resins can be monitored by
Increase in conductivity
Decrease in pH
Silica leakage
Silica is the main criteria of exhaustion of
anion resin
Parameter after SBA:
pH:7.5 8.5
Conductivity:<5s/cm
Silica:<.02ppm
MIXED BED
Mixed bed known as polishing unit
It produces DM water of conductivity
around 0.2 S/cm
Silica leakage is <0.02ppm
Consists of CATION and ANION
exchange resins
Capacity C2O 60 liters
A101D 60liters
Parameter after MB outlet
pH:5.8 6.5
Conductivity:<1s/cm
Silica: <0.02ppm
MORPHOLINE

pH booster
After dosing pH will be 8.5 9.0
To avoid corrosion in pipe line and in
DMST
