Introduction
In a case where only the inlet temperatures are known and outlet temperatures are
unknown, to calculate the heat exchanger performance, it is preferable to use the effectiv
eness-number of transfer units (-NTU) method.
This simplifies the algebra involved in predicting the performance of complex flow arrang
ements.
Definitions (1)
Effectiveness ()
This is defined as the ratio of the actual heat transfer rate for a heat exch
anger over the maximum possible heat transfer rate.
= Effectiveness
= Actual heat transfer rate
= Maximum possible heat transfer rate
Definitions (2)
Heat Capacity Rate (C)
This is expressed as mass flow rate times specific heat capacit
y.
C = Heat capacity rate (W/K)
= Mass flow rate (kg/s)
= Specific heat capacity (J/kg K)
Definitions (3)
Number of Transfer Units (NTU)
With the dimensionless number of transfer units (NTU) that is used for heat exch
anger analysis and is defined as
NTU = Number of transfer units
U = Overall heat transfer coefficient (W / )
A = Surface area for heat transfer
= Heat capacity rate ratio
Lower heat capacity rate
Higher heat capacity rate

Sample Problem
Hot oil is to be cooled by water in a 1 shel
l-pass and 8 tubes-passes heat exchange
r. The tubes are thin walled and made of c
opper with interal diameter of 1.4 cm, the l
ength of each tube pass in the heat excha
nger is 5 m and overall heat transfer heat
coefficient is 310 W/mK.
Water flows through the tubes at the rate
of 0.2 kg/s and oil flows through the shell
at the rate of 0.3 kg/s. the water and oil
enter at temperature of 20 oC and150 oC.
Determine the outlet temperature of the oi
l and water. (Cp oil = 2.13 Kj/kg oC, Cp wat
er = 4.18 Kj/kgoC)
Solution (1)
= = 0.3 (2130) = 639 W/K
= = 0.2 (4180) = 836 W/K
= = = 0.764
= = 639 (150 20) = 83.1 KW
A = n (DL) = 8 () (0.014) (5) = 1.76 m2
NTU = = = 0.854
Solution (2)
Calculating the effectiveness from the formula on the table
or from the graph we can get the effectiveness equal to:
= 0.47
=
= 0.47 (83 x 103) = 39.1 KW
Solution (3)
=
39.1 x 103 = 0.3 (2130) (150 )
= 88.8 oC
=
39.1 x 103 = 0.2 (4180) (20)
= 66.8 oC
