ASSIGNMENT 2
GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music
Video Assignment 02
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy
some sections require you to delete the information on
the slide and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress
through the pre-production phase.
TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research
RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or dont like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing
styles, techniques and conventions that we have
looked at in previous sessions. Explore how you could
interpret the song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant,
images, mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to
generate these
IRON SKY
PAOLO NUTINI
Idea 1
A big technique to use throughout the video is lip sync. This will be useful as part of this
song would be good for a lip sync. Lip sync is also good to fill the blanks in a music video
if there isnt enough. The video will also contain an array of long, medium and possibly
close up shots. This is to give the video a bit more variety when filming to try and
continue to entertain the audience.
Idea 2
For a part of the music video there is an extract from the film The Great Dictator with
Charlie Chaplin, the extract is from the famous last speech in the film. For this bit I want
to film somebody lip syncing the speech dramatically. The speech will also be in black and
white to match the realism of the speech as the film was in black and white too. This will
also show the audience visually that this is the speech part of the song.
Idea 3
The final idea I have for this video is too have someone with a trumpet pretend they are
playing a trumpet for the chorus, as the main instrument in the chorus is the trumpet and
I think that could be a key thing to put within the video, as it adds variety to the video.
RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance,
etc and how this might link to your production
7 YEARS
LUKAS GRAHAM
One main aspect throughout this video is that its black and white
video, this is because most of the settings look need to look bleak so
it can lock in with the deeper meaning of the song. This links to my
video as I want part of the video to also be black and white and I
wanted to find out how that looks on a music video and how it
impacts on the story in the video is portrayed. There are also many
different angles used in this music video. For example close ups,
medium shots and shots that are filmed of the persons back.
BITTER SWEET SYMPHONY
THE VERVE
This video is a great example of the use of long,
medium and close up shots. Those will be useful for
some of my shots in the video as they will contain
these kind of shots, an watching this video will give me
some great ideas on the techniques to use and how to
use them effectively in my video. It also gives me an
idea on how to shoot part of the video if my character
is walking. The character conveys his message by
always staring at the camera.
HAPPY
PHARRELL WILLIAMS
This video is a very good example of the use of fast cut
montages with different varieties of shots throughout
the video. This also uses the tracking camera technique
which is an idea I have fora music video. I chose to
review this video because the main aspect of this song
and video is happiness, which is also the main aspect of
one of the songs I'm thinking of making. Also in the
majority of the shots of this music video, there is one
person walking down the street which is an idea I had
planned.

CONVENTIONS
As Andrew Goodwin wrote in 'Dancing in the distraction
factory' in 1992, he said there is a relationship between
lyrics and the visuals and music and visuals. These are
the case in my music video as most of my video takes
place in the outside with the sun out. This is because
the theme of my song is to be happy and joyful and I
think the setting does that. He also said that there
should beintertextual references to other forms of
media, now there were plans to link this to the 'Walking
Dead' episode where this video originates from but I
have not found a way to fit that in with the theme and
story I have for this video.
MIND MAP OF
IDEAS
SUMMARY

5 opportunities of your ideas

1) I can create a decent video because the camera and
programs that Im using are quite good.
2) I have a studio at my disposal, so itll be easier to film as its
still in the college grounds so its easy to get to.
3) Doing a comedic video like Easy Street will be easy as
comedy videos seem to be easier to do than regular music
videos.
4) Happy Home would be an easy video to shoot as the video
will only have to be shot at my home so thatll save time on
travel.
5) I have people that are willing to be in my music video so a
search for people to be in the video will be easy to accomplish.
SUMMARY

5 restrictions to your ideas

1) Cannot film in the center of York without a permit to do so.
2) I can only film my ideas at times when theres not many
people so times between 7-10AM and 3-5PM cannot be done as
thats the main rush hour of the day.
3) I cant have loads of people in the music video because of
how short the song is for the video and trusting that many
people to turn up on time is unlikely.
4) I only have 2 weeks of proper filming for the video, so the
shots I take during the shooting days have to be good and
precise to my ideas, otherwise I wont be happy with the video.
5) Getting a war time costume for the Iron Sky video is
unlikely to happen.
FINAL IDEA
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Easy Street feat. Jim Bianco and Petra Haden / The
Collapsible Hearts Club
This song was released in 2016 and was primarily used
for the Season 7 Episode 3 of The Walking Dead, where
the song played in the song. After the airing of the
episode, the song rose to 92 on the UK charts. Petra
Haden is still relatively unknown but has contributed to
many other artists like Green Day, Foo Fighters and
Beck. She is the daughter of jazz bassist Charlie Haden
and one of her sisters Tanya Haden married Jack Black.
Petra Hadens genre of music is primarily rock and pop,
Jim Bianco who also sung the song with Petra Haden is
a critically acclaimed independent musician.
FINAL IDEA TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
The track is quite short (1:46) despite this, the song
conveys a message of how good the world really is
when its going your way. The pace of the song is quick
and snappy, its easy to film the video and have my
characters do actions to the beat of the song. Its style
is more happy and comedic than most music
nowadays, its a different style of song and thats why I
chose it for this project.
FINAL IDEA YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
The idea is to have a happy music video to go along
with the style of the song, I chose this song because I
wanted to do something different for a video instead of
doing the same generic type of music video. What Im
planning to do is to have some shots of the character
walking and lip syncing the song along with some
instruments playing at certain times in the song and
some dancing shots as well. I also want the majority of
the video to be filmed outside as that gives the video a
bit more joy and it gives me the freedom to create
some really good shots.
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make
your music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
GUIDANCE:
BUDGET TARGET
You have provisionally given an outline target of 2000
to make your music video
This target should include a 10% contingency [that
means your budget should allow for 200 pounds
within the budget so realistically you aim lower than
1800]
Your budget should account for everything, except your
own time and input
Consider more than one option to solve a requirement
you may be able to balance your budget later, there
will have to be a compromise somewhere
GUIDANCE:
TIME
You will need to plan a schedule for the pre-
production/production/post-production
Nominally you should work on 2 weeks pre-production,
1 week filming [2 college days Mon./Tues first week
after half term] and 2 weeks edit/post-production
Who is going to do what? How will you split the time?
When can you film? What is the availability of the
equipment/resources/locations/personnel?
What problems can you foresee? How will you
overcome them?
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
The song I chose for this project is called Easy Street by
The Collapsible Hearts Club, the plan for the music video is
to have an up beat and happy music video which is quite
different to other music videos out there nowadays. The
video will consist of a start credits scene that builds up to the
video, the song will then start. The song is 1:46 so I plan to
have a good yet quick music video, theres a fast pace to the
song yet an obvious beat to follow so thatll be easy to film
and edit to. The equipment required for the video will be a
camera, a tripod and a dolly
LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
York College I chose this as a location because there is a studio there that I
can book out, this is useful because it means I will not require a studio to hire
out. I will be using a white screen with suitable lighting for the camera and
plan to have someone pretend to play instruments and also lip sync the song
for parts of my music video. However for the purpose of this task I have found
an editing studio in Leeds to hire out for two days for certain scenes within the
music video.
Hob Moor, York I have chosen this location because there is a nice quiet path
to film me walking and lip-syncing the entire song to then use that as filler for
the music video. This location is quite secluded despite it being a popular path
for cyclists, thats why I have chosen to film this at a time where there wont
be many cyclists around perhaps the middle of the working day when there is
not many people around a few hours before the rush hour.
My House I chose this location as its quite accessible for me and the plan is
just to film a few shots of the character drumming to a beat etc.
LOCATIONS
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance,
access, cost, weather? How will you manage this?
One of the biggest concerns to filming this music video is weather, if it starts
raining then it completely ruins the filming process as my song is supposed to
be happy and fun and rain will not suit the video at all. The weather could also
potentially ruin plans for hiring out equipment that I have paid for already. I
have taken this into account and I should have enough money left over in my
contingency so that I can hire out equipment for another time.
Another problem I might encounter is that I can only film in the York area, this
is because I may not have enough money to travel to other places in the
2000 budget. I chose to spend more money on equipment and crew because
that is the most important part of the music video and I would much rather
have a better quality video than a great location to film a low quality video in.
Filming at Hob Moor is also the next biggest concern, this is because I dont
want to get in the way of any cyclists or any other pedestrian while filming. To
fix this problem I have decided to film at a time where there are not many
cyclists around for example the times from 1pm-2pm are good times because
the weather should be ok and bright to do the song in and there are very few
pedestrians around at those times as well.
EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
CAMERAS
This is the Canon EOS 5D MK3
Price 64 Per Day 320 Total Cost
I will need one working week (Mon-Fri)
for filming so I will need to hire a
camera for the 5 days. I considered this
camera because its a really good price,
this camera is also very small and easy
to carry this is important because the
locations of filming could potentially be
far from
This where
is the I live.
Canon XF100
Price 100 Deposit 300
I have considered this camera
because it also includes a free tri pod
when hiring this particular camera,
that would be easier and potentially
cheaper than hiring both a tri pod and
a camera. This camera is also quite
small like the Canon 5D camera which
CAMERAS
This is the Canon EOS 5D MK4
Price 88 Per Day 440 Total Cost
I have considered this camera because
this is the newer version of the 5D
range, because this camera is better
than the MK3 its also 24 more
expensive but I think this is good as I
want the film to look really nice.

This is the Canon EOS C300

Price 110 Per Day 550 Total Cost
I have considered this option as its the
most expensive option out of the 4
cameras I have shortlisted. This is by
far one of the best cameras out of 4
however I dont think I will have the
money to fit this into an appropriate
FINAL CHOICE CAMERA
I have decided to chose the Canon EOS
5D MK4 as my final choice camera,
despite it being 24 more than the
MK3 I think this is the best option to
choose. This camera will provide me
the best quality video, which is the
most important aspect of the music
video.
TRIPOD FINAL CHOICE
Vinten Pro-10DC Tripod
Price 16 Per Day 80 Total Cost

I have chosen this tripod as the
final choice as its not too
expensive and its a decent
price as well. The Tripod is also
Lightweight meaning its easy
to take the item to the location
and easy to maneuver to
different positions for filming.
FINAL CHOICE DOLLY
Manfrotto Automatic Folding
Dolly Black
Price 15 Per Day 75 Total
Cost
I chose this Dolly as it was the
cheapest one available on the
website Im currently looking at,
this will make it easier to film
the scenes where my character
is walking and my camera
needs to follow the character.
EDITING STUDIO
For the production of the music video to be made I will
need an editing studio for the creation of other shots
required for the video that take place indoors rather
than the outdoor setting. Doing this means we can get
shots for the video without having to worry about
weather issues. The place I found was called Brussels
Street Studio which is a 700sq ft. space with a 12x12ft
backdrop located in Leeds. This is perfect for the
creation of the other shots, the only problem is its
located in Leeds and would have to travel there some
PERSONNEL
CREW: For the crew, I only need one camera operator
for the video which will be paid 10 per York filming
which covers cost for food, and 20 per Leeds filming
which covers travelling and hopefully food
CAST: I will only need one actor for this music video
and I decided to have an average price of 10 per York
filming and 20 per Leeds filming. Which is the same
amount as the crew are being paid.

In total the cast and crew are being paid 140 for the 5
days of filming.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
The only props I will need for the music video will be
instruments, these will be for the section after the
chorus where the instruments are most prominent and
I think it would be good for someone to be playing
these instruments for these sections. The instruments
needed for this video are a Ukulele and a Trumpet. I
want the actor in the video to look like a very chill and
happy guy who is just in casual clothes. However I will
need him to have the same clothes throughout filming
to make the video have less problems.

costs
Local equipment hire companies have costs for camera, lenses
and kit [tripod, dolly, steadicam rigs, etc]
Travel by vehicle can be nominally charged at 40p per mile so
you need to know how far you location is from where you are!
CODES OF PRACTICE
AND REGULATIONS
Do you need clearance for copyrighted materials? [you will
need to contact Mechanical Copyright Protection Society-
Performing Rights Society Alliance (MCPS-PRS)]
Do you have performers external to your group performing?
They will need release forms that declare you can use footage
of them in the production. This needs to be planned for.
Do you have any actors under the age of 18? You will need
parental permission forms.
Are you filming on private property? You will need written
consent PRIOR to filming. Plan in advance. This needs to be
considered.
Consider where you may need specific risk assessments and
health and safety documentation
CODES OF PRACTICE
AND REGULATION
I will need clearance for the for the song as that could
possible be copyrighted material, as the version of the
song I am using has only been released recently. For
this task I have found an actor to be in the music
video, I will need a clearance form to allow me to use
the footage of him for this music video. The actor will
not be under 18 so parental forms will not be needed
but permission from himself will be needed. My outside
location can be used as far as I know, but if I do need
to I will ask for permission to film at that location
specifically. I will need a risk assessment of the outside
location and of the studio I am using, before filming so
it will be officially safe for me and my crew working on
the sites. I will need to make sure that my cast and
crew dont have any certain allergies before we start
filming on the outside location, this will also be useful
FINANCE/PRODUCTION
COSTS
Using industry rates cards and researched costs of
equipment [cameras], cast, crew, props and facilities
[locations, edit rooms, etc] calculate the likely cost of your
production
Outline details of financial considerations of project, this
could be cost of props/costume/travel/food/etc
Explain what your overall budget is [if applicable] and how
this is to be met
How will you deal with any extra costs? Contingency fund?
What percentage of your budget should this be? [hint: add
10% on to the final cost, this should cover it!]
Do you foresee any problems? How will you manage
this/over come them?
FINAL BUDGET
BREAKDOWN
Provide a costs table for your budget, if you have
considered more than one cost option, provide
alternative final budgets and state a preference with
justification for which option you would choose.
BUDGET EXPLANATION
AND JUSTIFICATION
I have been given 2,000 to fund this project and this is
my budget for the filming of this music video. I decided
to choose a good camera that has a good quality price
so I went for the "Canon EOS 5D MK4" as this is a good
price for a good quality camera for the music video I
then went for a tri pod and a dolly for the video which
are also decent prices to hire out. This is because some
of my shots require these equipment. I managed to keep
spending low when it came to getting locations. 2 of the
3 locations are free and might need permission forms,
while the third one does need to be hired out I do believe
I have enough money to get this place hired out for the
inside location shots.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you pre-visualise the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the look & feel
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the mise-en-scene
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-hunger-

Easy Street
CONCEPT BOARD
RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas
to each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of
the song, then add a slide for each section with
timings, lyrics, what happens and details on specific
shots

You could storyboard and shot list each section as you

go, to break up the process.

This is the location of most of the shots in the entire

video. This will be used as a good outside location as it
looks like the right setting for the song during the
spring time weather. I have provided a map image of
Hob Moor along with the council link to a page about it
where it says it's open access to anyone and doesn't
specify any required documents for filming.
RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing
document, you should evaluate if anything changes in
production and when you put control measures in
place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
