A BRIEF INTRODUCTION ABOUT TOPIC

According to IS1893-2000, dual system can

be defined as

Shear wall with moment resisting frame

Braced frame with moment resisting frame
The moment resisting frame should be designed to
independently resist at least 25% of design base
shear and their relative stiffness.
OMRF with shear wall 3.0
SMRF with shear wall 4.0
Ductile shear wall with OMRF 4.5
Ductile shear wall with SMRF 5.0
CONTINUED..
The dual system is the one that both frames and shear walls contribute in
resisting the lateral loads, where the frame is a group of beams and
columns connected with each other by rigid joints
and the frames bend in accordance with (Shear Mode), whereas the
deflection of the shear walls is by a (Bending Mode) like the cantilever walls.

The frames will try to pull the shear walls in the top of the building while in
the bottom they will try to push the walls, so the frames will resist the
lateral loads in the upper part of the building, which means an increase
shear walls will resist most of the vertical loads in the lower part of the
building.

NEED OF AND SCOPE OF DUAL
SYSTEM

The lateral load-resisting structure comprises ofmoment frameand

shear walls acting together in the same direction, and it is mostly
applicable to reinforced concrete structures
The bare frame alone can not be able to resist the earthquake in
multi storey building.
The walls may have a positive effect on the performance of the
frames such as by preventing a soft storey collapse.
Due to increase in the value of response reduction factor R, the
critical stress fuction i.e. storey drift ,deflection ,stiffness, strength
and other stress function.
The lateral load resisted by shear wall and bare frame is in their
proportion of stiffness
which leads to a better load path and load distribution mechanism.
AIM AND OBJECTIVE
Calculate the design load for bare frame

Calculate the stiffness of the dual system

To find the load distribution between the

METHODOLOGY OF WORK
I will take plan regular ,symmetrical multi storey building .

Modeling the building in SAP 2000 and apply the loading on that and apply
time history analysis any time history that is available. .

The building is first without shear wall i.e only special moment resisting
frame only and analyze it for the given time history load.

Calculate the base shear and its distribution along the height of building
And also calculate the intra storey drift and shear force and moment at
required location.

Again the plan is modeled and this time I will add shear wall in that model so
that to approach as to building with dual system i.e. SMRF with shear wall
Analyze the dual system behaviour for the time history that is apply in SMRF
frame only.
Calculate the load such that base shear and its distribution,intra-storey
drift, moment and shear and other stress function that are required at
desire location in the structure that is modeled

The stress function calculated in first part i.e. with SMRF are noted and
down the base shear and its distribution is noted at floor level.

The second analysis result is also noted down and their stress function the
base shear and its distribution at floor level is noted

According to IS 1893-2000 we have to ensure that building with dual system

can have-
The moment-resisting frame must be capable of resisting at least 25
percent of the base shear, and the two systems must be designed to resist
the total lateral load in proportion to their relative rigidities.
The two systems are designed to resist the total design force in proportion
to their lateral stiffness considering the interaction of the dual system at all
floor levels.
SCOPE OF WORK

The usefulness of structural walls in the framing of buildings has long

been recognized. It is generally preferred to use shear wall in
combination with moment resisting frame.

The scope of various dual system building is such that the

combination is used for multistory building which is situated in very
prone EQ area such as in zone 4 and zone 5
The use of moment resisting frame alone can not be able to resist
the major EQ, so the dual system is the substitute of that structure
The load distribution between the shear wall and frame should be
according to their stiffness such that a good load path that leads to
proper dissipation of energy.
The critical stress function in the dual system is reduced due to
increase in ductility and increase in response reduction factor.
