Respiratory protection is of primary
importance since inhalation is one of the major routes of exposure to toxic chemicals. Guidance on the requirements for respiratory protection should be sought from the MSDS and/or IBC Code CHEMICAL TANKER SAFETY TYPES OF RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Canister or Filter Type respirators Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCABA) Air Line Breathing Apparatus Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus (EEBD/ELSA) CHEMICAL TANKER SAFETY BODY PROTECTION
Contact with any chemical substance or product
should be avoided. All necessary care should be taken to prevent skin or eye contact. The skin needs protection from corrosive & dangerous chemicals. Guidance regarding the requirements for body protection should be sought from the MSDS and/or IBC Code. As a minimum personnel must always wash exposed areas of the body after duty. CHEMICAL TANKER SAFETY TYPES & GRADES OF BODY PROTECTION The type and degree of protection required is dependent on the physical, chemical or toxic properties of the cargoes being handled and whether the job is continuous or intermittent and the prevailing environmental conditions. CHEMICAL TANKER SAFETY TYPES & GRADES OF BODY PROTECTION Light Duty where only slight risk/occasional danger of splashing from mild substances. Uncoated cotton Coveralls etc. Medium Duty aprons and clothing containing PVC are usually satisfactory. Heavy Duty where chemicals may be highly corrosive and or toxic.Specialist chemical suits with machine stitched seams, electronically welded to stop penetration made of PVC, Neoprene & Polyurethane. CHEMICAL TANKER SAFETY EYE PROTECTION Eyes are particularly vulnerable to injury from corrosive and toxic liquids and vapours. Care should be taken to evaluate the chemical hazard properly, guided by the MSDS and/or the IBC Code and select the eye protector accordingly. CHEMICAL TANKER SAFETY TYPES & GRADES OF EYE PROTECTION There are three main types of eye protectors to choose from: Safety goggles giving complete chemical & mechanical eye protection Face Shields providing eye and face protection but no protection from vapours Safety Spectacles with or without lateral protection available with various lens materials (of little use against chemicals) CHEMICAL TANKER SAFETY HAND PROTECTION The number of hazards for which hand protection may be required can range from simple dust or vapour to protection against highly corrosive chemicals. The type & quality of hand protection required should be evaluated after consultation with the MSDS and/or IBC Code CHEMICAL TANKER SAFETY TYPES & GRADES OF HAND PROTECTION The type and degree of protection required is dependent on the physical, chemical or toxic properties of the cargoes being handled and whether the job is continuous or intermittent and the prevailing environmental conditions. PVC or Rubber Gloves are available in a
variety of thicknesses and weights Neoprene or Nitrile Gloves have excellent properties against a variety of chemicals Generally when gloves are being worn they should have long cuffs which can reach over the sleeves of normal clothing CHEMICAL TANKER SAFETY FOOT PROTECTION
Rubber or PVC boots need to be worn
when there is a risk of coming into contact with corrosive or toxic chemicals. Guidance should be sought by reference to the MSDS and/or IBC Code CHEMICAL TANKER SAFETY Care and maintenance of clothing & safety equipment is important. Contaminated clothing should always be washed or hosed down before the wearer takes it off. Used protective clothing should always be stored in a ventilated area OUTSIDE the accommodation. Breathing apparatus must be inspected at least once a month & bottles refilled, masks & helmets cleaned & disinfected immediately after use CHEMICAL TANKER SAFETY
