This paper first reviews and describes various
technologies that are enabling and supporting the wide
and continuous deployment of optical access. The
Passive Optical Network (PON) architecture and related
technologies have been assuming an important role in
realizing optical access in a cost-effective manner. Next,
recent advances such as 10-Gbit/s PON technologies are
summarized. Lastly, further challenges are discussed:
one of the important challenges is convergence of
optical and mobile access networks for future broadband
and ubiquitous communication services.

ABSTRAK
Fiber To The Home (FTTH) has rapidly penetrated the world to
provide broadband communication services to end users.
current-generation systems, 10Gigabit Ethernet PON (10G-
EPON) and 10Gigabit-capable PON (XG-PON) have been
standardized in IEEE and ITU-T; it is anticipated that they will
be deployed in the next generation to provide higher speeds
for more advanced services. Full Service Access Network
(FSAN) initiative, who propose G-PON and XG-PON to ITU-T [5],
is now studying further advancement of PON technologies to
realize a higher capacity with allowing flexible bandwidth
upgrade

PENDAHULUAN
most important technologies enabling the current massive
deployment of FTTH is timedivision multiple access (TDMA) PON,
which is applied to G-PON, XG-PON, GE-PON, 10G-EPON

RELATED
TECHNOLOGIES
Optical Network Units (Onu) .
in addition, standardization bodies developed many
methods to make pon systems practical and efficient. such
methods include ranging/discovery of onu, encryption, and
onu management and control.
Device/sub-system Technologies
At the device/sub-system level, the most unique and
important technology for PONs is the optical burst-mode
transceiver for upstream transmission
10-Gbit/s PON technologies As mentioned in the Introduction,
standardization of 10Gigabit Ethernet PON (10G-EPON) and
10Gigabitcapable PON (XG-PON) has been completed in IEEE
and ITU-T. Co-existence with 1-Gbit/s PON is a common
requirement in IEEE and ITU and their specifications reflect
this.
Power-saving technologies
Recent advances in PON technology include the successful
development of ONU power-saving functions. ITU-T started
studying PON power saving in 2006, and published ITU-T
Series-G Supplement 45 G-PON power conservation in 2009
[18]. The Supplement describes four power saving methods:
power shedding, dozing, deep sleep and cyclic sleep.
NG-PON2
The standardization of next-generation PON2 (NGPON2)
is progressing in ITU-T/FSAN. The target of NGPON2
is beyond the 10G-class-PON (XG-PON); its
requirements are shown in Table 1 [6].
Table 1. Requirements for NG-PON2
Bandwidth Upstream: 10-40 Gbit/s
Downstream: 40 Gbit/s
Physical split ratio 64
Reach 40 km(maximum)
Application Residential user, business user, mobile
backhaul

G-PON, XG-PON, RF-video, OTDR
Optical wireless convergence
Another interesting topic of research to further advance the
PON system is optical/wireless convergence. As for the
evolution of mobile technologies, the deployment of Long Term
Evolution (LTE), which has the peak rate of 300 Mbit/s
downstream and 75 Mbit/s upstream, has just started, and LTE-
Advanced is now being standardized; it targets 1Gbit/s
downstream and 500 Mbit/s upstream.
This paper first reviewed key technologies that are supporting
current PON deployment. The key technologies at the system
level and the device level were reviewed. Next, recent
advances in technologies and standards were summarized.
10-Gbit/s PON systems and power-saving functions have been
standardized, and related technologies are maturing. NG-
PON2, under study in a standardization body, is likely to adopt
TWDM-PON technology. By implementing wavelength-
tunability in NG-PON2 ONUs the following functions can be
realized; the colorless ONU, load balancing, power saving, and
redundancy.
