Global warming is caused by both human activities like burning fossil fuels as well as natural processes. It is defined as a rise in the average temperature of the Earth due to increased emissions of greenhouse gases. Some key facts are that the last century experienced the largest temperature increase in 1300 years, and the rate of warming in the last 50 years was double that of the previous 100 years. Effects of global warming include changes to climate patterns that can impact human health as well as the growth and migration of plants and animals. The document provides recommendations for individuals to help mitigate global warming such as using less energy and recycling more.

GLOBAL WARMING
THE HEAT IS ON….
What is global warming?
An increase in the temperature of earth due
to fossil fuels, industry, and agricultural processes caused by human ,natural, and other gas emissions is termed as global warming.Global warming is posing a danger to a human’s health. Global warming brings about a change in climate, which alters the growth pattern of plants and animals. FACTS ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING • In the last century, Earth has experienced the largest increase in surface temperature in 1300 years. • The rate of warming in the last 50 years was double the rate observed over the last 100 years. • Some scientists believe that Earth will experience record-setting heatwaves. CAUSES Global warming is caused by pollution, burning of fossil fuels, coal, wood, and oil that release abundant quantities of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Another cause is that nuclear power causes climate change. Nuclear power actually declines emissions of carbon dioxide instead of coal. Emissions from homes and factories are responsible for about 80%of today’s carbon dioxide emissions. EFFECTS Effects of global warming on human health might not be immeadiately identified. Birds and animals are the species that will be affected by a change in the climate. Fish may migrate to different areas . It may affect our future ability to obtain food. Enhanced precipitation is one effect of global warming that could spell devastating results. It has a negative affect on climate, which adversely affects humans. DON’TS • Don’t leave appliances on standby mode. Some appliances consume as much energy in standby mode as when they are switched on. • Do not use a car or a motorbike to travel short distances. Driving a distance of 6km in a car releases 1kg of carbon dioxide. • Buy fresh foods than frozen ones. DO’S • Plant trees-they absorb carbon dioxide • Recycle-it saves energy • Use energy efficient products • Save electricity • Car pooling COMPUTER HOLIDAY HOMEWORK 2010-2011 THANK YOU
