Process Optimization Case Study 12.1 Staged Distillation Column

This document presents a case study on optimizing a staged distillation column. The objective is to determine optimal operating conditions to achieve a top product stream of 10 lbmol/hr with minimum energy usage. The column has a feed of 100 lbmol/hr containing various components. Constraints include component mass balances, thermodynamic limits, and a maximum pentane concentration in the overhead. The HYSYS optimizer was used to determine the optimal conditions as 4.536 kmol/hr in the condenser stream, 40.823 kmol/hr in the reboiler stream, condenser and reboiler temperatures of -28.81°C and 6.25°C respectively, a reflux ratio of 76.
