Acid Rain: Introduction and Causes Parth Mehra Roll 33. Sec D

Acid rain is rain or precipitation that is unusually acidic due to elevated levels of hydrogen ions. It can harm plants, aquatic animals, and infrastructure. Acid rain occurs through wet deposition like rain or snow, and dry deposition of acidic gases and particles. While natural sources like volcanoes contribute some acidity, the main cause is emissions from human sources like power plants and vehicles burning fossil fuels which release sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides that can fall to earth as acid rain.

What is Acid Rain?

Acid rainis arainor any other form ofprecipitationthat is

unusuallyacidic, meaning that it possesses elevated levels of
hydrogen ions (lowpH).

It can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals and

Causes of Acid Rain

Natural Sources
Emissions from volcanoes and from biological processes that
occur on the land, in wetlands, and in the oceans contribute
acid-producing gases to the atmosphere
Effects of acidic deposits have been detected in glacial ice
thousands of years old in remote parts of the globe
Causes of Acid Rain

The principal cause of acid rain is from human sources-

Industrial factories, power-generating plants and vehicles.
Sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen are released during
the fuel burning process (i.e. combustion).
