Geometric Transformation 2

The document defines geometric transformations and discusses the four basic types of plane motions: reflection, rotation, translation, and glide reflection. It proves that these four types constitute a group of transformations by showing they satisfy the properties of closure, inverses, and identity. Specifically, it demonstrates the product of any two plane motions results in another plane motion, each has a well-defined inverse, and the identity is the trivial transformation leaving all points fixed.

DEFINITION:
A group of transformations
of the set A is a non-empty
set S of transformations of
the set A onto itself that is
close under products and
inverses. If f and g are in S,
then fg and f -1 are also in S.
The four basic types of plane motion

Reflection
Rotation

Translation Glide reflection

Definition : A plane motion is direct
motion if it is the product of an even
number of reflection. It is an
opposite motion if it is the product of
odd number of reflection.
THEOREM 2.4:

THE FOUR TYPES OF

EUCLIDEAN MOTION OF
THE PLANE CONSTITUTE
A GROUP OF
TRANSFORMATION.
PROOF:
i.Closure property
NTS: The product of two plane motion is
also a plane motion

By theorem 2.5 ( if a transformation is a

plane motion, then it is the product of
three or fewer reflection). A reflection is
a product of three reflections, a
translation and rotation are product of
two reflections and glide reflection is a
product of three reflections. Now, by
definition a reflection is opposite
motion, translation and rotation are
direct motion and glide reflection is
opposite motion.
Then,
reflection translation rotation Glide
reflection
Reflection Direct Opposite Opposite Direct
motion motion motion motion
Translation Opposite Direct Direct Opposite
motion motion motion motion
Rotation Opposite Direct Direct Opposite
motion motion motion motion
Glide Direct Opposite Opposite Direct
reflection motion motion motion motion

Therefore, the product of two

plane motion is also a plane
motion.
ii. Inverse property
Plane Inverse
motion
Reflection Reflection with
opposite direction

Translation Translation with

opposite direction

Rotation Rotation with the

same angle but
opposite direction

Glide Glide reflection

reflection with opposite
direction
THEREFORE, THE FOUR TYPES OF
EUCLIDEAN MOTION IN THE PLANE
CONSTITUTE A GROUP OF
TRANSFORMATION.
