Applications in Geotechnical Engineering: Raja Rajan - K Design Department

This document provides an overview of the PLAXIS software for geotechnical finite element analysis. It describes how PLAXIS was originally developed in the 1970s to model soil behavior and embankments in the Netherlands. Key features of PLAXIS discussed include its ability to model complex geometries, soils, drainage conditions, and interfaces using various constitutive models. Examples of applications presented include isolated footings, diaphragm walls, embankments, slope stability, and tunneling. Critical steps in modeling with PLAXIS involve soil characterization, drainage, and interface elements.

Plaxis - History
Around 1970, a software was developed based on finite element method to
predict the possible movement of the famous Dutch Oosterschelde-dam
which protects an important part of the Netherlands against flooding
Initially was intended to analyse the soft soil river embankments of lowlands
of Holland
This resulted in a software code that enabled elastic-plastic calculations for
plane strain problems based on high-order elements. Later, the code was
enriched and could deal with axi-symmetric problems too. It was in that time
that the name Plaxis, short for
used for the first time

PLAXIS ?
A Finite Element Package for analysis of deformation and stability
Geotechnical applications require advanced constitutive models for
the simulation of the non-linear and time-dependent behaviour of soils
Since soil is a multi-phase material, special procedures are required
to deal with hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic pore pressures in the soil
Plaxis software is equipped with special features to deal with the
numerous aspects of complex geotechnical structures
