Mpi Test

Magnetic particle testing is used to detect surface and near-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials. The method involves magnetizing the test specimen using a permanent or electromagnet, or by passing electric current through or around it. Any discontinuities present will cause distortions in the magnetic field that are revealed by iron particles applied to the surface. While quick and inexpensive, magnetic particle testing is limited to detecting flaws near the surface and requires the material be ferromagnetic.

MAGNETIC PARTICLE METHOD

Magnetic particle testing is used for the

testing of materials which can be easily
magnetized.
This method is capable of detecting open to
surface and just below the surface flaws.
In this method the test specimen is first
magnetized either by using a permanent or
an electromagnet or by passing electric
current through or around the specimen.

LIMITATIONS:
Material must be ferromagnetic.
Orientation and strength of magnetic

only.
Large currents sometimes required.
Burning of test parts a possibility.
Parts must often be demagnetized, which
may be
difficult.
