Stimulus Project

Tyler Paskowski & Colleen Gallagher

What is the Need?

Respiratory Health is a major concern for disabled
children
Building up lung capacity is essential to living a healthy life

Those with cerebral palsy are limited to wheelchairs

specifically at the Carter School
Not a lot of speaking or exercising the lungs

Need to find a way to motivate these kids while

increasing their lung capacity

Research/Related Work
those severely affected with CP die before they
reach the age of 20
Such deaths are usually a result of secondary
medical complications associated with primary
neurological dysfunction.
The two main complications include respiratory
infection and diminished pulmonary function

Research/Related Work Cont.

What is the main cause of pulmonary
complication?
Aspiration and ineffective cough
increase in mucous and inability to clear it
properly
food can get trapped in lungs

These problem can lead to recurrent pneumonia,

atelectasis, bronchiectasis, and restrictive lung
disease
Which can lead to premature death

Design Idea
Our concept is to create a direct and simple
cause & effect relationship
Producing a vocal noise will cause a visual
stimulus and/or auditory stimulus by means of
an iPad
Either type of stimulus will provide stimulating
motivation that a child needs to speak

Visual Representation
User Vocal Noise

Color expanding stimulus

Microphone (optional) &

iPad

Custom Audio Stimulus

Competitors
Apps exist for athletes and normal functioning
people to increase lung capacity
through exercise that cant be done by kids
with CP or is not stimulating enough
Apps exist for children with cerebral palsy
main focus is communication
speaks for them
visual application

Design Specification
App can be downloaded onto iPad

these options will be based on what the kids
at the Carter school respond best to
