Transcription Fundamentals
Transcription is synthesis of RNA using a DNA template
Three Key differences between DNA and RNA:
1. RNA contains the sugar ribose instead of deoxyribose
2. RNA contains the base uracil instead of thymine
3. Except in certain viruses RNA is not a doublestranded molecule
Three major types of RNA - all products of transcription of DNA:
1. messenger RNA (mRNA)
2. transfer RNA (tRNA)
3. ribosomal (rRNA)
Promoters
Promoters are specific sites
on DNA that RNA polymerase
first binds to to initiate the
transcription of a gene.
Sigma factors
Sigma factors are one
component of the
multicomponent RNA
polymerase enzyme that
allow the RNA polymerase to
recognize the initiation
(promoter) site.
Transcription Terminators
Transcription terminators are
sequences of nucleotide
bases at the end of the gene
that signal termination of
transcription.
