Law of Inertia (Newton's First Law of Motion) Law of Inertia (Newton's First Law of Motion)

Newton's First Law of Motion, also known as the Law of Inertia, states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. Galileo first observed that objects resist changes in motion and Newton later refined this idea into his First Law. Mass is the quantity of matter in an object and is measured in kilograms, while weight is the force of gravity on an object. The greater an object's mass, the greater its inertia and the harder it is to accelerate or change its motion.
