BRIEF HISTORY OF NASCO

Nasco group of company started in 1963 as northern fibre company with

the production of bags, carpet, rug in the central city jos of plateau state.

As effect of growth, the company emerged into branches which involve;

Nasco household, Nasco foods, Nasco pack, and Nasco fibre.

NASCO Household Products Limited was established in 1977, to

manufacture detergents, soaps and industrial chemicals like sulphonic
acid and glycerine.

NASCO Household Products Limited has an employment size of about

1,000 Skilled and unskilled. The detergent plant has an installed plant
capacity of 3 tonnes of detergent per hour and utilizes between 2-3
tonnes of detergent per hour.

DETERGENT PLANT

The detergent plant was where I carried out my industrial training

It has an installed plant capacity between 2.5 3 tonnes of detergent per

hour of storage tank.

The main function of the detergent plant is to produce dry detergent for
within the required density range for packaging and transportation with the
main objective of making profit

Detergent production is a neutralization process where acid (linear Alky

Benzene sulphonic acid) reacts with base (soda ash) and mixed together
with other fillers in a Crutcher to give detergent slurry as product. The slurry
is pumped to storage tank with the aid of seepex

(rotary) pump

Summary of work experience

The detergent production process is listed below

mixing and filtering at the batch slurry preparation unit(BSP)

Fuel combustion at the hot air generation chamber

Spray drying, quality check, crystallizing and seperation at the blowing

unit

ABS and moisture determination at the quality control unit

Perfuming, addition of sparkles and density balance at the post mix unit

Packaging and weight check at the packaging line

EQUIPMENTS

crutchers : mixing of raw material into slurry form

vibratory filter; separation of fine products from undissolved solid

seepex pump; it is a rotary pump that adds energy to the slurry by

sending it to the booster tank ( storage tank)

booster and aging vessel: used to store the produced detergent slurry

high pressure pump: it is a reciprocating pump that pumps slurry to

the spray dryer

spray dryer: consists of about 12 atomizer nozzles that transforms the

slurry into droplet form to creat last surface area for drying

EQUIPMENTS CONT

Conveyor belt: conveys the dried product through the airlift to the
cyclone

Cyclone: the cyclone separates the fine particles from dust and sends
the dust back to the spray dryer.

Crystallizer: gives the detergent powder a uniform shape and adds

density to the powder.

Storage tanks; for storage of dried detergent

Pakona. Its a machine use for packaging of detergent

Analytical balance; this is used for measuring density of dried product

The discharged air is environmentally friendly because clean air is

discharged from the cyclone into the atmosphere

CONCLUSION

The unit operations involve in detergent manufacturing is melting,

mixing, filteration, drying , sieving and packaging. Nasco household is a
reliable industry for practical experience and good training because it is
not small and it is not too large an industry.
