Deductive and Inductive Grammar Teaching and Learning.

The document discusses deductive and inductive grammar teaching methods. Deductive teaching involves presenting rules first and then examples, while inductive starts with examples and derives rules. Both activate different skills in students. Deductive is more teacher-centered while inductive is student-centered and involves students noticing patterns to draw their own conclusions. The most effective approach combines both deductive and inductive characteristics and focuses on students' needs.

Deductive and

inductive grammar
teaching and learning
By : Lina Arellanes
& Susana Bojorquez

Introduction
Deductive and inductive grammar teaching are both
methods used by many teacher s to introduce grammar
rules, or to send students on a search of a rule, both
concepts are extremely different.
It could be said that the already mentioned concepts
activate different skills on our students. Althought some
students can be perfectly comfortable with both, others
will only understand one.

Deductive and inductive

reasoning
Topdown

We start
with general
notion or
theory

The general idea is

narrowed down to an
specific hypothesis.
That then is tested.

Bottomup

We start from
a specific
idea

We awake
observations, come up
with conclusions,
identify patterns and
formulate hypothesis.

Deductive and inductive grammar

learning
Both grammar learning methods are reasonable to
use, because indeed both give us positive results.
The students role in this part is to NOTICE, when a
student notices or identifies the rule the rest of the
learning process activates. When a students knows
what he is doing and how he is doing it ( the rule)
students start learning.
Deductive approach (rule-driven) starts with the
presentation of a rule and is followed by examples in
which the rule is applied.
An inductive approach (rule-discovery) starts with
some examples from which a rule is inferred.
Thornbury, 1999

Deductive and inductive

instruction
Two very distinct and opposing instructional approaches
are inductive and deductive. Both approaches can offer
certain advantages, but the biggest difference is the role
of the teacher. According to Dr B http://
www.educ.ualberta.ca/staff/olenka.Bilash/best%20of%20bil
ash/inductivedeductive.html
.
Deductive instruction is Teacher-centre, this means that
the teacher will explain instruct and will do most of the
work, giving students little independent learning, and it
doesnt give the students a chance to think and reason on
their own.
Inductive instruction is Student-centre, and it is based
on the strategy known as noticing , this means students
will be provided with several examples and they slowly
start noticing a pattern, a certain sequence on the rule,
once the students understands this they will draw
conclusions and will know the principles of the rule.

Some agreement exists that the most effective grammar

teaching includes some deductive and inductive
characteristics.
Haight, Heron, & Cole 2007.

According to Haight, Heron, & Cole the idea

of teaching grammar in a particular singular
way is not as effective as using both
deductive and inductive characteristics,
combing this both methods might bring the
best out of our students. The real obstacle
here is knowing how to combine this methods
to come up with a new one. A one that
makes students draw their own conclusions,
and makes them learn in a correct way, some
students can think they have leant a rule by
a few examples but the truth is that at some
point they might need teacher clarification

Both deductive and

inductive sequences are
valuable for teaching concepts,
generalizations, processes, and
skills. The teacher must decide
which to select given the
learning outcomes desired and
the composition of the class.

To conclude, balance is needed

between inductive and deductive
approaches when it comes to
teaching, but remember you
must always focus on your
students needs and interests in
order to use any approach during
your teaching-learning process.
