Jet Engine Ignition System

The document summarizes the key components and functions of a jet engine ignition system. The ignition system provides sparks to ignite the fuel-air mixture during engine start up and acts as a safeguard against flameouts. It contains a low and high tension system to generate high voltage sparks. The basic system includes a low tension lead, exciter box to amplify the voltage, high tension lead to the igniter plugs, and two igniter plugs per engine. It can also automatically relight the engine through an autorelight system if flames go out during flight. There are two main types of igniter plugs: the constricted air gap type and shunted surface discharge type.

Chap 12- Jet engine ignition system

I- functions of a jet engine ignition system

the primary purpose is to provide a high intensity spark
for igniting the fuel and air mixture during engine start.
A. Used primarily during start.
B. Once the engine is started ignition is normally turned
off.
C. The ignition system is also used as a precaution
against engine flame-out during critical conditions
D. Two ignition systems, minimum, are required per
engine for safety
E. The ignition system should provide one spark
discharge minimum per second

II- types of ignition systems

A. The high energy Capacitor Discharge type is
the most common type used on modern gas
turbine engines because of
its high voltage and high heat intensity spark.
B. There are two subtypes of Capacitor
Discharge Ignition Systems. They are:
1. The Low Tension System which is supplied 28
volts DC to each exciter unit before
augmentation
2. The High Tension System 115 VAC

III- block diagram of a jet engine basic

ignition system

A. Low tension lead-- delivers low voltage / low amperage input

from A/C electrical system to the ignition system..
B. Exciter Box- amplifies the input voltage and create high voltage /
high amperage pulses
B(1). High voltage pulses are created inside the exciter box at the
internal triggering transformer.
C. High tension lead- delivers high intensity voltage / current from
the exciter box to igniter plug
D. Igniter plug provides a discharge gap for the pulses to ground.
D(1). Normally, 2 pulses (sparks) per engine. ( 1 in each system).

IV- autorelight
1. Provides ignition for re-light if engine flamesout during flight
2. Senses burner or compressor discharge
pressures. If either falls below a certain
value, auto ignition would automatically
provide a relight spark
3. System is de-energized for normal shutdown of the engine.

V- types of igniter plugs

There are two basic types of igniter plug:
1.The constricted air gap type
2. and the shunted surface discharge type.
The constricted air gap type is similar to the spark plug,
but has a larger air gap. A High voltage of approximately
18000 - 25,000 volts is required before a spark will
occur.
The surface discharge igniter plug operates by
permitting electrical leakage from the central electrode
to the body, and this creates pulsating electrical arc.
Only requires 2000 volts or above.
