Secondary Data Analysis of Mortality Data of

Thiruvallur District, Tamilnadu, India 2014-15

Background:
Tiruvallur District has a Population of 22,61,804 . (Source DDHS O/o)
Rural with population of 20,93,767 and Urban population of 1,68,037.
Tiruvallur has a Crude death rate of 4.7 as compared to Tamilnadu State
crude death rate of 7.3 (SRS 2013)
Tiruvallur district is divided into 11 Taluks, 14 Blocks, 5 Municipality and 10
Town Panchayats for Administration purposes.
Recently started Civil Registration System certification in Tiruvallur district
covers 10 Town panchayat & 5 Municipalities.
The State Health Intelligence Bureau, unit of Deputy Directorate of Health
Services Tiruvallur has the responsibility of collecting, compiling and analysing
of mortality related data collected from these reporting units yearly.

Tiruvallur district had 14458 total number of deaths for the year 2014-15.

Data Analysed: Civil Registration system Data sets of Thiruvallur District for the year
2014-15.
Data Source: Deputy Director of Health Services State Health Intelligence Bureau,
Thiruvallur District.

Total deaths:
10 Town Panchayats accounted for 1231 deaths.
5 Municipality accounted for 3180 deaths
Of these total deaths, 2692 were Males and 1719 were Females.
Of the Total 14458 deaths in Thiruvallur district for the year 2014-15, the secondary
data analysis is done for the deaths reported at the Town Panchayat & Municipality
(4411).

Overall, Non communicable diseases accounted for more than half of the deaths
(68.2%),followed by other causes (28.1%) as there are more not classified cause of
death. Lastly Infectious Diseases accounting for 3.6%.

Circulatory system diseases, predominantly Heart diseases which


caused more than half of the deaths and second leading cause was
Cancer(other than unknown & Senility). Thirdly RTAs ,Bronchitis &
Asthma were the leading cause of Infectious diseases next followed by
Tuberculosis.
External causes of death mainly included Suicides/Homicide/Accidental

Overall the proportions of deaths due to Non Communicable diseases was


higher amongst males (44.5%) than females (29.5%). The proportion of
deaths due to Road Traffic Accidents, Cancer, and Suicides were
significantly higher in males as compared to females.
