STUDENTS LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

DESCRIBE THE PROCEDURE FOR FINDING THE PERIMETER OF A

POLYGON

IDENTIFY THE APPROPRIATE UNIT THAT REPRESENTS PERIMETER

COMPUTE THE PERIMETER FOR A VARIETY OF POLYGONS

ESSENTIAL
QUESTIONS

What is the perimeter?

How is the perimeter found?

Why do we need to know how to

find the perimeter?

PERIMETER
THE PREFIX PERI
MEANS AROUND

PERIMETER IS THE DISTANCE AROUND A FLAT

OBJECT OR THE SUM OF THE LENGTHS OF ITS SIDES

PERIMETER

THE PERIMETER IS THE SUM OF THE MEASUREMENTS OF EACH

SIDE OF THE OBJECT
IT IS MEASURED IN LINEAR UNITS OR ONE-DIMENSIONAL
MEASUREMENT BECAUSE IT MEASURES THE OUTLINE OR PATH
OF AN OBJECT

THE LINEAR UNITS ARE FEET, INCHES, METERS, AND ETC.

WHY DO WE NEED TO KNOW

HOW TO FIND THE PERIMETER?

TO FIND THE MEASUREMENTS OF

A FENCE TO PROTECT PETS OR
LIVE STOCK FROM ESCAPING.

TO FIND THE DISTANCE AROUND

A POOL FOR INSTALLATION

TO FIND THE LENGTH OF A

BANNER TO GO AROUND THE
CLASSROOM

HOW DO YOU FIND THE

PERIMETER OF THIS SQUARE?
5 feet

SINCE THIS IS A SQUARE, THE

LENGTH OF THE SIDES ARE THE
SAME
ADD THE
5 feet

5 feet
5 feet

LENGTH OF
THE SIDES: 5
5 feet FEET +5 FEET
+ 5 FEET + 5
FEET= 20 FEET

HOW DO YOU FIND THE

PERIMETER OF THIS OBJECT?

THIS IS A RECTANGLE

AGAIN, ADD THE LENGTH OF THE

SIDES : 11.3 cm + 25.4 cm +
11.3 cm + 25.4 cm = 73.4 cm

So, the Perimeter of this

rectangle is 73.4 cm.

How would you find the perimeter

of this figure?

This is an irregular polygon

It appears to be a 27 feet by 30
feet rectangle with a section
missing

We must determine the lengths

of the non-labeled sides

The missing
horizontal
is 6 feet because
the bottom
6 feet
measure is
30 feet and top
9 feet
measure is 24 feet.
30 feet minus 24
feet gives us 6
feet.
The vertical distance is 27 feet on the
left side of the figure and 18 feet on the right.
27 feet minus 18 feet gives us 9 feet. 27 feet + 24 feet+ 18 feet+
6 feet+ 9 feet+ 30 feet = 114 feet. The perimeter or
of this object around this object is 114 feet.

HOW DO YOU FIND THE PERIMETER

OF A CIRCLE??
I thought you would never ask!!!
The perimeter of a circle is
called the circumference. It is
the distance around the circle.
To calculate the circumference,
multiply the diameter
of the circle

by
= 3.141592654

Finding the circumference

VOLUME

Volumes Lesson
Objectives

Students will be able to:

Recognize that the volume of a solid can
be found by multiplying the area of the base and height
of the figure

Use the appropriate units and procedures

to calculate the volume of a solid

Essential questions

What is volume?

What purpose do we calculate volume?

What is volume?

Volume is the amount of space

that a solid, liquid, or gas
occupies or that is enclosed in a
container.

It is three dimensional made up

of the length, width, and height
of an object.

It is measured in cubic units

The purpose for calculating

volume

The purpose of calculating

volume is to determine the
amount of space we need to
perform a task such as filling a
jar with jelly beans, how much
water is needed to fill a pool, or
parking a car in a garage.

Volume is found by multiplying

the area of the base of the object
by the height or multiplying the
length, width, and height of the
object

Steps for finding the volume of a

object

Write down the dimensions of the object

Find the area of the base of the object

Multiply the area of the base of the object and the height of the
object

Express your answer in cubic units

EXAMPLE: Find the volume of the

trapezoidal prism

Trapezoidal Prism

The dimensions for the trapezoid

is:
1=b4 ft. 2 , b = 8 ft, and h= 50
ft.

The height of the prism is 20 ft.

Area of the base,

which
is a trapezoid

x 50ft. X (4ft.+8ft.)= 7500

The unit is square ft.
The area of the base is
7500 square ft.
The height of the prism is
20ft. 7500 square ft. x 20ft.=
150,000 cubic ft. The final unit is
cubic ft. The area of the
trapezoidal prism is 150,000 cubic ft.

Lets try a
rectangular prism

Rectangular prism

The dimensions of the figure is:

20cm, 8cm, and 16cm.

The base of the figure is a

rectangle. To find the area of the
base (rectangle) is length x
width.

8 cm x 20 cm= 160 square cm

Multiply the area of base and

height of the prism which is
16cm.

160 square cm x 16cm= 2560

cubic cm.

A= 2,560 cubic cm.

Its your turn. Find the volume for

It could be thought of as the

amount of paper needed to wrap
a shape

How do you find the surface area

of a figure?

Add the area of all the sides of

the shape to find the surface
area (SA)

Write down the dimensions for

each figure

In this case, there are two tops

(or top and bottom), two sides,
and two fronts

SURFACE AREA
DIMENSIONS FOR TOP: 10M X 5M, SIDE: 5M X 6M, AND FRONT: 6M
X 10M

TOP: 10m x 5m= 50 square meters

SIDE: 5m X 6m= 30 square meters
FRONT: 6m x 10m= 60 square meters
50+50+30+30+60+60=280 sq. meters
Youll need 280 sq. meters of paper
to completely wrap this box.

SA=280 SQ. METERS

Triangular Prism

In this example, the prism is

made up of three different
