Limiting Reagent

The document defines key terms related to chemical reactions: a limiting reactant is the first reactant used up in a reaction and determines the amount of product, while an excess reactant is added in excess and is cheaper and easier to recycle. It provides an example using LEGO blocks to illustrate a limiting and excess reactant. It then provides steps to determine the limiting reactant in a problem: 1) write a balanced chemical equation, 2) calculate amounts of each product using stoichiometry and the smaller amount identifies the limiting reactant. Finally, it defines percent yield as the percentage of actual product produced compared to theoretical yield predicted by stoichiometry calculations.

Limiting Reactant

used up in a reaction
determines the amount of
product
Excess Reactant
added to ensure that the other
reactant is completely used up
cheaper & easier to recycle

Example: LEGO If you had three yellow blocks and four red
blocks, you could only make three yellow/red combinations
because there is not enough yellow blocks to make four. The
yellow block is the limiting reagent and the red block is the
excess reagent

Use the steps below to solve the following

problem to determine the limiting reactant.
1. Write a balanced equation.
2. Do a separate mass to mass problem starting with
each reactant. The smaller answer is correct.
To find out how much of the excess reactant is left
over,
1. Start with the initial mass of the limiting reactant and
2. Do a mass to mass problem to determine how much
of the excess reactant was needed.
3. Subtract that value from the initial mass of the
excess reactant.

Percent Yield
The percent yield is the percentage of a
certain product actually produced in a
chemical reaction.
The theoretical yield is predicted by a
stoichiometry problem.
