SFRC

This document discusses steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC). It provides an introduction to SFRC, noting that it is a composite material made of Portland cement, aggregate, and discrete steel fibers. The document then outlines the contents to be covered, including the benefits, toughening mechanisms, classifications, mechanical properties, applications, problems, and conclusions regarding SFRC. It provides details on how SFRC has superior resistance to cracking and propagation, and improves properties such as strength, ductility, and durability.

STEEL FIBER REINFORCED

CONCRETE
INTRODUCTION:
Composite materials made with Portland cement, aggregate, and
incorporating discrete discontinuous steel fibres.
Steel fiber is most commonly used FRC.

Superior resistance to cracking and crack propagation.

Flexural strength, fatigue resistance, impact resistance,
permeability, shrinkage and corrosion
When the fibre reinforcement is in the form of short discrete
fibres, they act effectively as rigid inclusions in the concrete
matrix

STEEL FIBER REINFORCED

CONCRETE
BENEFITS OF SFRC:
Improve structural strength
Reduce steel reinforcement requirements
Improve ductility

Reduce crack widths and control the crack widths tightly, thus
improving durability
Improve impact and abrasionresistance
Improve freeze-thaw resistance

TOUGHNESS MECHANISM:

STEEL FIBER REINFORCED

CONCRETE
CLASSIFICATION-VOLUME FRACTION:
Low volume fraction (<1%)
Moderate volume fraction (1 -2%)
High volume fraction (greater than 2)

CONCRETE
APPLICATIONS OF SFRC:

More than 400 tones of steel fibers used in Mathura(up)

A 3.9km long heating tunnel from a power plant on island amager

Steel fibers are used in parking garage of Heathrow airport

Fabrication of pipes, boats, wall panels, roof panels, manhole

covers.

STEEL FIBER REINFORCED

CONCRETE
PROBLEMS WITH SFRC:
Reduces the workability
Loss of workability is proportional to volume concentration of
fibers

Higher aspect ratio reduces the workability

Steel fibers are not cost effective
Fibers are added in adequate quantity

STEEL FIBER REINFORCED

CONCRETE
CONCLUSION:

At elevated temperature,SRFC have more strength both in tension

and compression

Workability of SFRC reduces when % of steel fibers increase

Flexural strength increases upto the optimum value of 0.75%

Compressive strength increases upto the optimum value of 1%
