Colonial Times
In 1521, Ferdinand Magellan sailed around the world and made his
way to the Philippines which led to the attention of Europeans
In 1565 Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, established the first Spanish
colony in the Philippines
After The Spanish-American War in 1898, The United States took
control of the Philippines and began integrating their own
government on the islands
World War 2
The United States controlled the Philippines during WW2 until the
Japanese attacked Luzon on December 8, 1941
The Japanese held the Philippines for 3 years until liberated by the
United States in 1944
About 1 million Filipinos died during the war and over 90% of the
casualties were Filipino citizens
About 10,000 American soldiers were killed
and another 36,000 were wounded

This is similar to how the prisoners felt carrying a 30lb bag or some of them
carried dead bodies
76,000 prisoners of war (66,000 Filipinos, 10,000 Americans) were forced by
the Japanese military to endure in April 1942, during the early stages of
World War II
Only 54,000 prisoners reached the camp (exact numbers are unknown)
Some 2,500 Filipinos and 500 Americans may have died during the march
Additional 26,000 Filipinos and 1,500 Americans died at Camp ODonnell

When the Elephants Dance whose father was
a Filipino child
in the middle of one of the worlds harshest and
bloodiest war.
Holthe was able to use the stories told by her
father and use them to write her novel.
Though this book was a historical fiction,
Holthe was able to add true, key factors of life
about the Philippines.

Back to Manila. A caravan of walking skeletons. After an hour some of
the women begin to fall. The men keep walking. When someone does
not get up, the soldiers prod them with the points of their blades. Those
without [children] are not helped by the others. Those who fall are
stabbed. They do not cry out, and no one speaks. It has become dog
