Alternative Energy?

Buzzwords such as GREEN, SUISTANABLE, CHEAP, NON TOXIC,

RENEWABLE come up when discussing alternative energy.
Alternative Energy = Anything but energy from hydrocarbons.
Roughly 85% of the worlds Energy comes from hydrocarbons.
These buzzwords are definitely something new within society.

The Whale Dilemma

Over 3 million whales were killed
in the 20th Century

But WHY ?

Introduction to the Oil Industry

Upstream

An array of professionals including Geologists, Petroleum Engineers,

Drilling Engineers, Geo-Physicists.
Process:

Upstream - Drilling

Regarded as the most dangerous activity in the industry.

Not as simple as drilling a hole into the ground .. Would you believe it ?
Pressures which need to be balanced
We use mud.
If pressures are not balanced we can get a
BLOWOUT.

Blowout Deepwater Horizon

Killed 11
Located in GOM
4.9 Million Barrels of oil spilt into the ocean
$42.5 Billion fine (BP) (Biggest ever fine in corporate history)
BOP Failed

Midstream

Transportation of Oil and Gas:

Pipeline
Rail
Barge
Tanker

Downstream

Where the magic happens

Can You see any object
here which is not a
derivative of oil ?
Chemical Engineers
Process Engineers
Turn crude into useable
components.

World Oil Production

World Oil Production

The US Geological Survey estimates that we have used around 710

billion of the worlds 3 trillion world supply.
There is roughly around 60 years of oil left.
Increasing demand ?
Increasing population
BUT WHAT ABOUT TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS.

What Is being withheld from the public?

We express the recovery of an oil well by recovery factor.

On average by natural depletion we rarely reach over 10% recovery
In some instances we are achieving 5% recovery.
The estimated oil reserves are RECOVERABLE RESERVES.
NOT OIL IN THE GROUND.

WHAT IF ?

So what if we can improve technology to enable the recovery factor to

reach a higher figure lets say 90%
Well we would have 100s of years of oil ahead of us.
There is plenty of research going into this with very large budgets.
The techniques are called EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) methods.

So where are we now with EOR techniques ?

Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Techniques to date:

Hydraulic Fracturing
Water Injection
Gas Injection
Polymer Flooding
Pumps (ESP, Rod etc.)

A Short Fix?

These techniques can do a lot of bad for the environment and are
certainly not GREEN.
Oil will still run out at some point even if it is extended for over 100-200
years.
So what now

RENEWABLES

What The Oil Industry is Doing

Petroleum Engineers and the majority working in the oil industry are
working towards a sustainable future.
Total acquired SunPower for $1.4 billion
Other Supermajors have made big investment.
It is in the best interests of everyone to move to a more
sustainable fuel source.

Not such a simple transition

Cooperation

Cooperation is needed within all industries to make this transition.

For Example: If everyone is driving around in petrol driven cars then
there will still be a demand for petroleum.
If Coca-Cola continue to use petroleum in their bottles then there will
still be a demand for petroleum.

NOT JUST A SIMPLE SWITCHOVER

Conclusion

The Industry is certainly moving forwards and not backwards.
