Transformations Jamie Bird

The document discusses different types of transformations including dilations, translations, reflections, and rotations. It provides examples and definitions of each type of transformation. Interactive activities are also listed to help students learn about each transformation. The document aims to teach students about geometric transformations as outlined in the 8th grade TEKS standards.

TRANSFORMATIONS

BY: JAMIE BIRD

TEKS: 8TH GRADE

(10)Two-dimensional shapes. The student applies mathematical process standards
to develop transformational geometry concepts. The student is expected to:
(A)generalize the properties of orientation and congruence of rotations, reflections,
translations, and dilationsof two-dimensionalshapeson a coordinate plane;
(B)differentiate between transformations that preserve congruence and those that
do not;
(C)explain the effect of translations, reflectionsover thex- ory-axis, and
rotationslimited to 90, 180, 270, and 360 asapplied to twodimensionalshapeson a coordinate plane using an algebraic representation.

TRANSFORMATIONS
A transformation is a term used to describe manipulations that can be
done on an object. Such manipulations include;
Rotations
Reflections
Translations
Dilations

TRANSFORMATION EXAMPLE: DILATION

A dilation merely means to change the size of

the object or image without changing its
shape or direction in which its facing.

TRANSLATION
A translation is described as Sliding an object without changing its
shape or size. Simply just moving it from one point to the next.

TRANSLATION EXAMPLE

As you can see in this image the

original square (red) is simply moved
from one quadrant to another creating
the new image (blue).

REFLECTION

A reflection is the flip of an object across

a line creating a mirrored image of that
particular object.

REFLECTION EXAMPLE
In this image you see
the word reflection
being mirrored onto
the water. This is great
explanation of how a
reflected object would
look.

ROTATION
A rotation is the circular motion of an object. The
object will move around a point that will remain the
same throughout the movement.

ROTATION EXAMPLE

An example of rotation would

be a windmill. A windmills
blades travel in a circular
motion around a point that
will always remain the same.
