Multiplication of Monomials, Binomials and Polynomials

This document provides rules and examples for multiplying polynomials. It explains that to multiply monomials, you multiply their coefficients and variables. For polynomials, you use the distributive property (FOIL method) - multiply the first term of the first factor with each term of the second, then the second term with each, and add like terms. Examples show multiplying binomials and finding the product of binomials and monomials. A grid method is also presented.

MULTIPLICATION OF

POLYNOMIALS

RULE : TO MULTIPLYING MONOMIAL BY ANOTHER

MONOMIAL
1. IF THERE ARE COEFFICIENTS ON THE TERMS
THEN WE
MUST FIRST MULTIPLY COEFFICIENTS BY
COEFFICIENTS.
2.THEN WE MULTIPLY THE VARIABLE OF ONE TERM
BY THE VARIABLE IN THE OTHER TERM.
RULE : MULTIPLYING A POLYNOMIAL BY A

FIND THE PRODUCT OF THE FOLLOWING:

1. 3X ( X) 2. (2X ) ( 5X)
3. (4X2) (2X3)
-y)(-8x)
5. (3XY3)(6XZ)

Solution:
1. 3x(x) = 3 1 x x = 3x2
2. (2x)(5x) = 2 5 x x = 10x2
3. (4x2) (2x3) = 4 2 x2 x3 = 8x5
4. ( -y)(-8x) = -1/4 -8 y x = 2xy
5. (3xy3) (6xz) = 3 6 x x y3 z =
18x2y3z

4. (

FIND THE PRODUCT OF 5X AND X + 4

Solution:
5x ( X + 4 ) = 5x( x ) + 5x ( 4 )
= 5x2 + 20x
Try and Solve : 4x (x + 5) = 4x2 + 20
5x2 ( 2x + 6) = 10x3 + 30x2

RULE : MULTIPLYING BINOMIAL TO BINOMIAL.

DISTRIBUTIVE METHOD ( ALSO KNOWN AS FOIL
METHOD) APPLIES TO ALL POLYNOMIAL
MULTIPLICATIONS, NOT JUST TO BINOMIALS.
1. START WITH THE FIRST TERM IN THE FIRST
BINOMIAL MULTIPLY (DISTRIBUTE) THIS TERM
TIMES EACH OF THE TERMS IN THE SECOND BINOMIAL.
2. NEXT MULTIPLY SECOND TERM IN THE FIRST
BINOMIAL TO EACH OF THE TERMS IN THE SECOND
BINOMIAL
3. ADD THE LIKE TERMS OF THE RESULTS

MULTIPLY (B+ 3)(B+ 2)

xx + x2 + 3x +32
x + 2x +3x + 6
= x + 5x + 6

GRID METHOD

(X + 3) (X + 2)

2x + 6 + (x)(x) + 3x
2x + 6 + x2 + 3x
Answer: x2 + 5x +
