History

The End of Greek Dark ages.


The Birth of the city-state.
Every city-state had its economy
based on agriculture.
By the end of the 8th century B.C
there were more than 1500 colonial
city-states.

The Archaic period


The term Archaic means Structural
revolution.
Greek culture began to develop
during the Archaic period(800-480
B.C).
The spread of colonization along
Mediterranean and Black sea.

The city-states were ruled by a


single ruler.
The adoption of the Phoenician
alphabet.
The end of the archaic period is
conventionally marked by the
Xerces invasion of Greece.

Areas of Greek settlements

Classical Period

(480-323 B.C)
After the invasion of Xerxes on
Athens united Greece against a
common enemy.
The Classical period began.
This period saw the height of the
Greek civilization.

Greek democracy, culture, art and


architecture flourished in this
period.

Alexander III

A Greek king of Macedon


Alexander III conquered whole of
Greece and created one of the largest
empires of the ancient world.
He united the whole of Greece
together.
Alexander broke the power of Persia.

He invaded India in 326 B.C .


He had made series of plans to
invade Arabia and its surroundings.
He wanted to go farther but was
forced to turn back.
He died in 326 B.C in Babylon and
with him came the end of the
classical period and the starting of
the Hellenistic period.

Hellenistic period

Alexander died and he left behind a


huge empire.
So a series of civil wars started
between the heirs and the surviving
generals of Alexander's army.
The wars tore the great empire of the
Greeks apart.

So in 32 B.C the Roman Empire


took over the whole Greece and
they laid the starting of a new era
and thus the era of the Greeks came
to an end.

Mythology

Greek religion was based on


polytheism.
They believed in many Gods.
There were three major Gods and
the rest were Demigods.

Major Gods

There were three major Gods:Zeus (God of thunder)


Poseidon (God of the sea)
Hades (God of the underworld)

ZEUS

Great God Zeus.


The God of the sky
and king of gods of
Mount Olympus.

Poseidon

God of the sea.


Ruler of all the
waters and
aquatic life.

Hades

The God of the


underworld and
all the souls of
mans after their
death.

Demigods

There were many Demigods and each


one of them was a God of something
particular for e.g.

Areas (God of war)


Apollo (God of the sun)
Aphrodite (Goddess of love)
Hermes (The Messenger) etc.
Heracles (The God of Health)

It was believed that there are some


demigods who live between human
and proved to be great heroes.

Persius
Helen of Troy
Minos

Every city-State had their own God.


Temples were made.
Sacrifices were made to please the
Gods.
It was believed that Gods come
down from Mount Olympus to
reward or punish the people
according to their deeds.

Conclusion

The Greeks were one of the greatest


civilizations.
They laid the foundation of many
great things like Science, art and
technology and the Olympian games.
They had a rich culture.
