Care and Use of Equipment


The way you handle and the way you use and care for your
drafting tools or instruments define you as a draftsman.
Tools are very vital to a draftsman as their condition is a
replica of how a draftsman works.

Care and Use of Equipment


There are rules for proper equipment care:
Foremost is that to allocate a place for each piece of
equipment and a place where to jeep or store them when
they are not in use.
Another is to keep each piece of tool or instrument clean.
Always remember to avoid any pointed instrument from
exposure as they may probably be damaged especially the
pointed part.

It is important to bear in mind that each drawing
instrument or tool has its own specific purpose or use and
using it in inappropriate task is strictly discouraged.
Also, as a draftsman, you must be responsible in ensuring
that any electrical instrument or tool is unplugged
whenever it is not in use.

How you begin your work dictates how you will end it.
Make sure to have all your necessary and needed instruments before you start ay
drawing activity or session.
Place them orderly in your workplace in such a way that you can easily get and
grab them when needed.
A systematic arrangement of drawing equipment is time saving and efficient. It
decreases a chance of an accident brought b improper use of drawing instruments.

Taking good care of your drawing instruments prevents
them from acquiring nicks, chips and holes on their
surfaces.
As mentioned in Lesson 1.1, there are drawing board covers
that can be used. A vinyl material is an excellent example as
it protects the cover while reducing glare thus providing
excellent drawing surface.

Care and Use of Equipment


For re-pointing and sharpening process, a woodcase pencil must be
sharpened by cutting away the wood until 5/8 of the lead has been
exposed with small, deliberate movements using a small scalpel, mat
knife or razor blade before using a sandpaper pad to make a conical point.
Always wipe out any dust or graphite from the lead using a cloth or paper.
To make sure youll be creating a conical point use either a sandpaper
desktop printer, a cutting-wheel lead pointer, a vertical electric pencil
sharpener or an electric pencil sharpener.
Sandpaper is a piece of wood with stapled sandpaper sheets at the end.

With graphite lead, a sandpaper pointer works well.
It is used by rotating your pencil as you hold them
clockwise.
The cutting wheel pointer, however, has a slot that could
make the lead sharp pointed for a slightly dull point that is
best for lettering.

In using a pen with conical point, always draw with just
small space between the point and the straight edge that you
are using like T.-Square, parallel bar or triangle.
This would be done by having 90 vertical position of the
pencil or you may tilt your pencil towards you at a slight
angle from the vertical.
Remember not to tilt your pencil away from the straightedge.

If you are making horizontal, vertical or oblique lines
like those that are slanted or angled, lean your pencil at
approximately 60 from the drawing surface to achieve best
lines drawn.

Never sharpen your pencil over the drawing or close to
ay equipment and make sure you keep its lead sharp.
Your T-square must not be used on any rough surface or for
cutting paper using its edge as this can damage its plastic
edge.

If you are using technical pens, always clean them by
wiping out or scrapping the excess ink on it through the use
of clean and slightly wet cloth.
You may also use the blade for scrapping.
Never leave any kind of mark on your drawing board to
retain its smoothness.

Divider is used in inscribing a circle. Below are the procedures:
1. Set the desired radius on the divider using the appropriate graduations
on a ruler.
2. Place the point of one of the divider legs on the point to be used as the
center.
3. Lean the divider in the direction of movement and scribe the circle by
revolving the divider.
Like other tools with pointed edge, divider must always be kept clean and
dry with its point being protected from any damage like being bent or
broken.

Selection of Drawing
Tools/Instruments
The choice of drawing instruments must also put into consideration
to make sure that the best and finest drawings are produced.
Drawing table is recommended to be adjusted in both height and tilt
of the top. The adjustable drawing table is needed so you can adjust
them according to your preferred height when making drawings in
standing position without stooping or holding your arms in a slightly
raised position. The top of your table must be left flat or inclined
according to our preference.

Selection of Drawing
Tools/Instruments
Choose a chair or stool that is high enough and that allows
you to view the whole drawing board. Set its height in such a
way that you can view the board without the need to lean
over, thus making you feel uncomfortable to draw. The height
of your chair must compensate the height of your drawing
table. This will help you look directly at any point of your
drawings by slightly shifting your body. This means that your
line of sight should be approximately perpendicular to the
drawing surface.

correct requisition of any instrument or tool.

Like any other forms, borrowers form must be
completely and accurately filled out this form would help
inventorying team to make inventory easier.
Borrowers slip comes in different formats according to
the preference and needed information about the
department in-charge of the instrument being borrowed.
