Springs: The Pioneer of Mechanics

Springs are elastic objects that store mechanical energy and are commonly made of steel. There are different types of springs such as flat, leaf, torsion bar, and helical springs. Steel springs include hard drawn springs and music wires. Quality control of springs involves testing for properties like hardness and deformation under force. Springs are widely used in aerospace for applications like pressure regulation, fail safes, speed control, and shock absorption in systems such as landing gears, engines, and mountings.

WHAT ARE SPRINGS?

A spring is an elastic object used to store
mechanical energy which are usually made out of
spring steel. Springs are widely used as force
transmitting devices and generally rated as
Force/distance i.e. lb./in or N/m.

TYPES OF SPRINGS
Flat spring: This type is made of a flat or rectangular
piece of metal which are primarily used in contact
breaker of magneto of piston engine aircraft

Leaf springs: This type of spring is made by the layers

of flat springs and are commonly used in automobile
and were used in landing gears of early aircrafts

Torsion bar: These uses long metallic bar to transmit

torsion force and is used as control bars to control
tyre movements.

Helical springs: These springs are used to absorb shock,

or to maintain a force between contacting surfaces
Under tension or compression,
the material (wire) of a coil spring undergoes torsion.

Steel Springs

Hard Drawn Spring Wires Cold: Average stress

applications. Lower cost springs and wire forms. Hard Drawn is
the most
inexpensive general purpose spring steel and
should be used only where life, accuracy, and
deflection are not too important

Music Wires: It is made from tempered high-carbon steel,

also known as spring steel has a very high tensile
strength to cope with the heavy demands

Quality Control and Checks

Various testing devices are used to check completed springs
for compliance with specifications
The testing devices measure properties as
The hardness of the metal
The amount of the spring's deformation under a known force
Springs that do not meet the specifications are discarded.
Statistical analysis of the test results can help manufacturers
identify production problems and improve processes so fewer
defective springs are produced

Approximately one-third of defective springs result from

production problems. The other two-thirds are caused by
deficiencies in the wire used to form the springs
Computer-operated coiling machines improve quality in two ways.
First, they control the diameter and pitch of the spring more
precisely than manual operations can.
Second, through the use of piezoelectric materials, whose size
varies with electrical input, CNC coiling heads can precisely
adjust in real time to measurements of spring characteristics.
As a result, these intelligent machines produce fewer springs that
must be rejected for not meeting specifications.

Application of Springs in
Aerospace
Springs in Aerospace are used in
Pressure regulating devices: Fuel, hydraulics and
pneumatic systems

Fail safe devices: Electrical relays, solenoid and mechanical

actuators

Speed control devices: Engine propeller control system and

wheel braking system

Shock absorbing devices: Landing gears and anti vibrating

mountings
