Design of Mechatronics Systems

This document discusses enhancing an overhead crane through adding machine vision and gesture control capabilities. Currently, cranes are manually controlled through wired controls for start, stop, and axis movement. The proposed enhancements include adding PID control to improve axis motion precision, and machine vision to allow gesture-based control from a remote location. A Microsoft camera is selected for machine vision. A Kinect sensor is selected for gesture recognition. The crane will have a single moving axis driven by a DC motor controlled through an Arduino or Raspberry Pi controller interfaced with a computer. The goal is to provide a mechatronic system design and implementation for practicing industrial standards.
