ESOPHAGITIS

Esophagitis
is inflammation that may

damage tissues of the

esophagus, the muscular tube
that delivers food from your
mouth to your stomach.

CAUSES
GERD
Swallowing a toxic substance
Hernias
Vomiting
Infection

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Reflux esophagitis

develops when gastric contents are

regurgitated into the esophagus. In
other cases, where acid reflux from the
stomach is persistent, the result is
damage to the esophagus, causing
symptoms and macroscopic changes

Infectious esophagitis

patients with systemic disease (DM,

adrenal dysfunction, alcoholism,) and
those advanced age can be predisposed
to infectious esophagitis because of
altered immune function.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

dysphagia
odynophagia
Sore throat
Heartburn
Chest pain

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
Endoscopy

Endoscopy can be used to remove any

lodged pill fragments, food or foreign

bodies stuck in the esophagus.
Stretching (dilatation) of the esophagus
can also be done as part of the
endoscopy procedure.

EGD

(esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
an endoscope used to directly
examine the esophagus, stomach, and
first part of the intestine

Barium swallow
is a test where x-rays are taken of the
esophagus after drinking a barium
solution

PHARMACOLOGIC MNGT.
Reflux esophagitis -

antacids (maalox)
h2 blocker receptors (ranitidine)
proton pump inhibitor
(lansoprazole, omeprazole)

SURGERY

Fundoplication may be used to improve

the condition of the esophagus if other

interventions don't work. A portion of the
stomach is wrapped around the valve
separating the esophagus and stomach
(lower esophageal sphincter). This
strengthens the sphincter and prevents acid
from backing up into the esophagus.
