CHE 102: Chemistry and Society: Saquib Ahmad Khan

This document provides an overview of CHE 102: Chemistry and Society. It begins with background on why chemistry is important, noting that everything is made of chemicals and chemical reactions cause many observable changes. It then defines chemistry as the study of matter, its properties, and interactions. Key aspects of chemistry discussed are that it is a science based on the scientific method, involves the study of composition and properties of matter, reactivity of substances, and connections between the macroscopic and molecular worlds. Chemistry is called the central science as it forms the basis for other fields like biology and medicine. Examples of common chemical reactions in everyday life are then provided, such as photosynthesis, respiration, combustion, and rust.

CHE 102:

Chemistry and Society

Lecture 1

Saquib Ahmad Khan

Background
Chemistry is important because...
Everything is made of chemicals.
We are made of chemicals.
So are dogs.
So is the desk.
So is the sun.
Drugs are chemicals.
Food is made from chemicals.
The changes we observe in the world around are caused by chemical reactions.
Examples include changing colors of leaves, cooking food and getting clean.
Knowing some chemistry can help to make day to day decisions that affect our
life easier and safer.
Identifying ingredients in certain foods/ products you may be allergic to
Are all mosquito coils safe?
Will my bottled water expire?

What is Chemistry?
Simply
the study of matter, and its changes.
Officially..
the science that systematically studies the composition,
properties, and activity of organic and inorganic substances
and various elementary forms of matter

Chemistry is the "scientific study of matter, its

properties, and interactions with other matter and
with energy

Aspects of Chemistry
1. Chemistry is a science.
There is only one accepted procedure for determining whether a
statement about matter is really chemistry:
the scientific method.
systematic observation
measurement
experiment
formulation
testing
reproduction
2. Chemistry is the study of the composition and properties
of matter.
4

Aspects of Chemistry
3. Chemistry is the study of the reactivity of
substances.

One material can be changed into another by a chemical

reaction.
A complex substance can by made from simpler ones.
Chemical compounds can break down into simpler
substances.
Fuels burn, food cooks, leaves turn in the fall, cells grow,
medicines cure. Chemistry is concerned with the essential
processes that make these changes happen.

Aspects of Chemistry
4. Chemistry is the study of organic and inorganic
substances.
Organic substances contain hydrogen combined with carbon;
inorganic substances don't.
It was once believed that organic compounds were exclusively
produced by living things, but today chemists can synthesize
many organic materials from inorganic ones.

Aspects of Chemistry
5. Chemistry is the study of connections between the
everyday world and the molecular world.
Chemists use atoms and molecules to explain properties and
behaviors of matter.
Chemistry can explain why roses are red at the molecular
level

Chemistry the Central Science

Chemistry is often called the central science because it is so
important to other fields of science.

Chemistry forms the basis of such subjects like

Biology and Botany
Geology and Archeology
Medicine and Biochemistry

Chemistry in our lives

When you mix chemicals in a lab, it's easy to see the reaction, but
lots of chemical reactions occur in the world around you every day
Matter interacts to form new products through a process called a
chemical reaction or chemical change

Chemistry in everyday life

Chemistry happens in the world around you, not just in a
lab.
Every time you cook or clean, it'schemistry in action.
Our body lives and grows thanks to chemical reactions.
There are reactions when you take medications, light a
match, and take a breath.

We will have a look at 5 common chemical

reactions happening around us everyday
10

1. Photosynthesis

Plants apply a chemical reaction called

photosynthesis to convert carbon dioxide
and water into food (glucose) and oxygen.
Carbon dioxide + Water +Sunlight
Glucose + Oxygen
6 CO2 + 6 H2O + light C6H12O6 + 6 O2

2. Aerobic Respiration

Aerobic cellular respiration is the opposite

process of photosynthesis
Glucose molecules are broken down by
chemical reaction with oxygen releasing
carbon dioxide, water and energy.
Glucose + Oxygen Carbon dioxide +
Water + Energy
C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy (36 ATPs)

11

3. Anaerobic Respiration

Respiration without oxygen

Glucose Ethanol + Carbon dioxide +
Energy
C6H12O6 2C2H5OH + 2CO2+ energy
Chemical reaction used in making
cheese, wine, beer, yogurt, bread, and
many other common products.

4. Combustion
Combustion is a chemical reaction in
everyday life
Commonly known as burning
Rapid chemical reaction of a substance
with oxygen, producing heat and light

12

5. Rust

Rust is caused by a chemical

reaction between iron and
oxygen
