Introduction
Fire on board is one of the most dangerous things which
could happen on a ship, it is caused by combining 3
elements 1) source of ignition
2)oxygen
3)flammable substance
The most important thing is quick detection by the crew and
fast response by the fire fighting team to ensure the safety
of peoples lives, ship and the cargo.

Classifications of Fire
In order to successfully put out a fire, you need to use the
most suitable type of extinguishing agent. The job of
picking the proper agent has been made easier by the
classification of fire types, or classes, lettered A through D.

Fire detection systems

1)Hand detectors
2)Automatic detectors
a)heat detectors
b)smoke detectors
c)flame detectors

Extinguish materals
1)Water
2)Foam
3)Powder
4)Carbon dioxide

Water-oldest known fire Foam-extinguish

extinguisher on the
flammable liquids by
planet
covering the fire and
blocking any supply
of oxygen in the air
Powder-used to
extinguish fires which
occur in nearby
source of electricity

Carbon dioxide-gas
which is heavier than
air and it lowers the
oxygen percent

Fire protection on bord

Ensured by the SOLAS convention, the resolution of

FSS-code (International Code for fire safety sistem)
and the resolution of the FTP-code (International Code
for application fire test procedures)

Fire fighting on deck

Sprinkler system

used to extinguish
fires in the engine
room, cargo and
passengers spaces

system is
automatically
triggered when the
room temperature
rises on the specific
point and the bulb
breaks
water is pressurized
and drops on the
flames

Conclusion

Fire fighting on board is the most important measures

of precaution in case of any type of fires in any room
on the ship.
Systems must be prepared to activate in any time and
inspected daily.
There are special conventions on which decisions
have been made to ensure the best possible
protection on ships
