Differentiate between
skin and non-skin
detection

Skin Detection
Skin detection is the process of finding
skin-colored pixels and regions in an
image or a video. This process is typically
used as a preprocessing step to find
regions that potentially have human faces
and limbs in images.

Issues
Issue 1: How exactly color distribution has to be
modelled?

Explicitly Defined Skin


Region
This method explicitly defines the
boundaries of skin cluster in some color
spaces. The explicitly defined skin
region method is the easiest and fastest
method to define skin color region.

Non Parametric Methods


In this method skin distribution is
estimated by training data without
developing explicit model for skin color.
This method is always used as the first
step to detect face.

Histogram-based
Qualitative observations:

Color space is quantized into a number


of bins, where each bin corresponds to a
color range

The detector tends to fail on


highly saturated or shadowed skin.

Parametric Methods
In this method they require less training
with data.

Gaussian fitted skin color model, we can


now obtain the likelihood of skin for any
pixel of an image

RGB
RGB is most common color space for
image representation. It was developed
with CRT. RGB color space contains
three additive primary colors, red,
green and blue.

High cost of conversion
Pixel with large and small
intensities are discarded as HS
becomes unstable.

YUV is the color space used in the PAL
system of television broadcasting which
is the standard in most of Europe and
some other places

Region Based Methods.
Pixel Based Methods

Region Based Methods


Is established on the basis of pixel based
approach. It takes the spatial
arrangement of neighboring pixels to
improve performance of skin pixel
detection.

Pixel Based Methods


In this method each pixel is categorized in
form of skin pixel and non-skin pixel apart
from neighboring pixels.

Pixel based methods are fast in processing


and more appropriate for different
geometric patterns in skin color. Moreover
as they are more sensitive to resolution
changes hence they dont need the use of
artificial colour signs in image.
