Mac vs. PC

The document compares Macs and PCs on security, customizability, and price. It summarizes that: 1) Macs are not inherently more secure than PCs, as they can still get viruses and require anti-virus software like PCs. They are just attacked less often due to smaller market share. 2) Macs have more restrictions than PCs which Apple calls "jailing" but limits customizability. PCs give developers more freedom which enables more advanced software. 3) A comparison of equivalent Mac and PC systems found the Mac to cost $1,520 more, showing Mac hardware and software is typically overpriced compared to PCs.

Mac vs.

PC
PowerPoint Presentation created by Brian
Doherty
Overview
 Show the fallacy behind one of Apple’s
“Get a Mac” TV ads
 Display the advantages of a loosely
restricted development process
› Security vs. Safety
 Compare the prices of two very good,
equivalent computers, 1 Mac, 1 PC
Mac’s Supposed
“Immunity”
“…It’s not about the
operating system that is
being run on the computer,
it’s the fleshy human sitting
in front of it.”
-Graham Cluley, Sophos

senior technology consultant

Apple Propaganda
 Over 50% of experts
agree, Macs are
also susceptible to
viruses
 Most viruses on PCs
are caused by
human error
 Anti-virus will be
needed regardless
of operating system
 Over 100 known Mac
specific viruses
 Macs are not immune,
they simply are
attacked less often
Expert Opinions on Virus
Vulnerability
Reasons Mac’s Are Attacked
Less
 Macs have a smaller share of the market,
most virus coders want a bigger bang for
their buck, and shoot for the larger
Windows market
 “I think the Mac is less risky, not more secure.
The difference is in the threat
environment. An analogy would be an
unlocked house in an urban vs. rural
environment. Both are insecure. One, the
rural, is less risky.” – Chris Wysopal
 Programmers have lazy tendencies, since
they already have code for viruses specific
to Windows, why would they make a new
Distribution of Operating
System Users
Windows Customizability
and the Apple “Jail"
“To ask the question from a consumer’s
perspective you probably should be using
the word ‘safe’ rather than ‘secure’; two
completely different things. ‘Secure’ is a
supermaxprison. ‘Safe’ is a playground
in suburbia.”
 -Jeremiah Grossman
Apple “Jail”
 Apple products sacrifice
power and
customizability for
supposed “safety”
 Apple places harsh
restrictions on many
products, and on the
overall power a
programmer has
when developing for
the Mac OS X
 These restrictions and
sacrifices led users to
refer to many apple
products as “jailed”
Examples of Apple “Jails”
 Three “jailed” Apple products:
› iPod Touch
› iPhone
› iPad
 Allthree are only allowed to use apps
approved by apple
Disadvantages of “Jailing”
 Many of the most advanced features on
“jailed” Apple products are not available
under the restrictions of the jail
 Software that is written outside of the jail,
or “jail-broken” software is often more
advanced and customized
 “Jailing” gives Apple a monopoly of sorts
on the apps available for some of it’s
products
 This jail let’s Apple moderate and filter the
content of users

Advantages to
Customizability
 Windows is more customizable, which
allows programmers that develop for the
platform more power and accessibility
 This increased power allows the
programmer to make stronger, quicker,
and smaller programs
 Since the market for Windows applications
is so open, a user can get any type of
software they want, and the presence of
healthy competition means that the
software will be available at a fair price
Price Comparison
Why buy an $800 computer

for $2300
General Price Comparisons
 Apple has a small fraction of the users
that Windows has
 Apple has higher profits than Windows
 This must mean that Apple gains more
profit per customer, most likely
meaning they are charging you more
extra money than you would get
charged on an Windows PC
Current Mac Vs. PC
Comparison
Mac Windows PC
Processor: Intel Core i5 Intel Core i5
RAM: 4 GB DDR3 RAM 4GB DDR3 RAM
Hard Disk Size: 500 GB 500 GB
Screen Size: 17” 17.3”
Height: .98” 1.3”
Width: 15.47” 16.5”
Depth: 10.51” 10.9”
Weight: 6.6 pounds 6.4 pounds
Price: $2,299.00 $779.00
Interpretation
 Both computers have nearly identical
hardware
 The Mac has smaller screen, but weighs
more than the PC
 The Mac costs $1520.00 more than it’s
equivalent Windows PC counterpart
Summary
 Macs are no less susceptible to viruses
than a Windows or Linux PC
 Macs are less customizable than
Windows PCs
 Mac software is less likely to be as
cheap as comparable Windows
software
 Mac hardware and software is typically
overpriced
