Transformations Project

The document defines different types of transformations: translations move a shape up, down, or sideways by a set number of units; reflections flip a shape across an axis; and rotations turn a shape a specified number of degrees. Examples are given of each type of transformation, showing a pre-image shape and the resulting image shape. Online resources are also provided with interactive demonstrations of translations, reflections, and rotations.

TRANSFORMATIONS

EMILY ALVARENGA

TEKS
(8)Data analysis. The student applies mathematical process
standards to collect and organize data to make it useful for
interpreting information. The student is expected to:

(A)collect, sort, and organize data into two or three categories;

(B)use data to create real-object and picture graphs; and
(C)draw conclusions from real-object and picture graphs

WHAT IS A TRANSFORMATION?
A transformation is the word used to describe
how shapes move at different points, lines,
and even their own shape. The image before
it moves is called the pre-image. When the
shape is changed in any way it is undergoing
a transformation.

EXAMPLE
There are different categories of
transformation:

Translation- a slide

* Reflection- a flip of the

shape

Rotation- a turn of a shape

WHAT IS A TRANSLATION?

A translation is when a shape slides

up, down or sideways by counting a
certain amount of numbers you want
it to move.

EXAMPLE
You see image ABC, the preimage, on a graph. Image A
B C was moved 4 to the
right and 4 down in order to
get the new translated
image.

WHAT IS A REFLECTION?

A reflection is when a shape flips

up, down, or side ways on the X
or Y axis by counting how many
points away it is from the origin.

EXAMPLE
This shape is being
reflected over the Yaxis. As the image is
being flipped the
points are being as
well.

WHAT IS A ROTATION?

A rotation happens when a shape is

being turned a certain degree to the
left or to the right.

EXAMPLE
In this picture you
can see the
lighter triangle
being turned over
the Y-axis to
create the new
triangle.
