NOLI ME TANGERE, unlike many


works of fictional literature was a
true story of Philippine condition
during the last decades of spanish
rule.

The Characters
Maria Clara

- Leonor Rivera, in real life


she became unfaithful,unlike the heroine of
the novel and married an englishman

-Ibarra and Elias - represented Rizal himself.


-Padre Salvi - was identified by Rizalist as
padre Antonio Piernavieja, the hated
Augustinian friar in Cavite who was killed by
the revolution

-Capitan Tiago was Capitan Hilario Sunico


of San Nicholas

-Doa Victorina was Doa Agustina Medel.


Basilio and Crispin - were the crisostomo
brothers of Hagonoy

-Padre Damaso

was typical of a
domineering friar during the days of Rizal who
was arrogant, immoral, and Anti-Filipino

MISSING CHAPTER OF THE


NOLI
-the original manuscript of Noli me Tangere, there
were was a chapter entitled"Elias and Salome"which
following Chapter XXIV
In the Woods - particular chapter on Elias and
Salome was deleted by Rizal his reason so was
definitely economic.

Rizal's Friends Praise the


Noli
His friend, Blumentritt, congratulated him for the beautiful
novel about customs which he found interesting. The work was
written with the blood of the heart, and so the heart also speaks.
He further mentioned that he knew Rizal was an extraordinary
man which he mentioned also to Pardo de Tavera.

In London, Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor, Filipino patriot and


lawyer who had been exiled for his participation in the Cavite
Mutiny of 1872 congratulated Rizal and wrote If the Quixote
immortalizes its author because it exposes to the world the
ailments of Spain, your Noli Me Tangere will bring you an
equal glory
