Basic Subsea Engineering

The document discusses the key aspects of basic subsea engineering including understanding the oil and gas reservoir, system breakdown, well barrier philosophy, installation process, and production process for a subsea production system. It first explains how oil and gas are formed from organic matter deposited in ocean basins under high temperature and pressure and are found in source rock, reservoir rocks, seals, and traps. It also describes how oil and gas move from the source rock into reservoir rocks and become trapped by seals.

Understanding the Oil and Gas Reservoir

Oil
and
Gas
(Hydrocarbons)
are
formed
by
anaerobic
decomposition of organic
matter that accumulates
from the deposition of
algae and bacteria in
deep ocean basins under
high temperature and
pressure.

Understanding the Oil and Gas Reservoir

Hydrocarbons are found mainly in

places that have the following rock
types that are suitable to their
formation

Oil and Gas Source Rock

Reservoir Rocks
Seals
Traps

Understanding the Oil and Gas Reservoir

Oil and Gas are formed in Source Rocks over a very long
period of time (2000 3000 years).
Oil is formed at lower temperatures than Gas.
Once the Oil and Gas are formed. They move into porous and
permeable rocks called Reservoir rocks.
Most Reservoir rocks also contain water and this makes the
Oil and gas move up (it is denser) until it comes in contact
with another type of rock formation - A seal that does not
let the Oil move up anymore.
The arrangement of the Reservoir and Seal formation is
called a trap and that is where the accumulation of the Oil
and Gas Occurs
