What is Self Defense?

acountermeasurethat
involves defending
thehealthand well-being
of oneself or of another
fromharm.

DEFINITION OF
SELF DEFENSE
Physical self-defense is the use of physical
force to counter an immediate threat of
violence. Such force can be either armed
or unarmed. In either case, the chances of
success depend on a large number of
parameters, related to the severity of the
threat on one hand, but also on the mental
and physical preparedness of the defender.

BASIC SELF-DEFENSE THAT

EVERYONE CAN DO AND
EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW~

AVOID WALKING
ALONE
If you've got a long walk home from the bus or
train station at night after work, consider meeting a
friend near the metro stop and walking together.
Staying in groups is the safest way to avoid these
kinds of situations. If you must walk alone, gloom
onto another group of walkers and stick close by.
You don't have to know them to find safety in
numbers.

ALWAYS ARM
YOURSELF
Mace and pepper spray are handy defense
devices you should consider having at the ready.
Knives and guns are dangerous weapons many
consider useful, but can also be used against you
if you're unprepared to use them yourself. Be
very cautious and smart if you choose to carry a
weapon and take the proper certification classes
to make sure you know how to handle a weapon
safely. Never carry one illegally.

REMEMBER! Prevention
Is The Best Self-Defense
Try your best for avoiding confrontation,
if you can defuse a situation (talk
someone down from physically
assaulting you) or get awayby handing
over your wallet/purse or whatever they
want, do that. Hand over your money
rather than fight. Nothing you own is
worth more than your life or health.

If you cant avoid violence

from happening , then you
should try some basic and
effective self-defense
which can keep you safe.

1)Get Loud and Push Back!!!

If attacker touches you or its
clear that escape isnt possible,
shout loudly (BACK OFF!) and
push back at him or her. This does
two things: it signals for help and
it lets the attacker know youre
not an easy target.

The Most Effective

Body Parts to Hit~
When youre in a confrontation, you only
have a few seconds and a few moves to try
before the fight may be decided. Before an
attacker has gained full control of you, you
must do everything you canconserving as
much energy as possibleto inflict injury
so you can get away. (This is no time to be
civil. In a physical confrontation that calls
for self-defense, its hurt or be hurt.) So
aim for the parts of the body where you
can do the most damage easily: the eyes,
nose, ears, neck, groin, knee, and legs.

Eyes: Gouging, poking,

or scratching the
attackers eyes with your
fingers or knuckles would
be effective, as you can
imagine. Besides causing
a lot of pain, this should
also make your escape
easier by at least
temporarily interfering
with his vision.

Nose: If the attacker is

close in front of you, use
the heel of your palm to
strike up under his nose;
throw the whole weight of
your body into the move to
cause the most pain and
force him to loosen his grip
on you. If hes behind you,
you can strike his nose
(from the side or front) with
your elbow. Either way, aim
for the nasal bones.

Neck: The side of the neck is a bigger

target, where both the carotid artery
and jugular vein are located. You could
possibly temporarily stun your attacker
with a knife hand strike (all fingers held
straight and tightly together, with
thumb tucked and slightly bent at the
knuckle) at the side of the neck. (For
even more injury, you could thrust your
elbow into your assailants throat while
pitching the weight of your body
forward.

Knee: The knee is an ideal self-defense target,

vulnerable from every angle and easily kicked
without risk of your foot being grabbed. Kick
the side of the knee to cause injury or partially
incapacitate your attacker. Kicking the front of
the knee may cause more injury but is less
likely to result in imbalance.

EARS : Clapping on the ears can stun the

attackers or if it done perfectly , it breaks
the attackers eardrums.

HEEL STOMP
If your being attacked from the back,
chances are the attacker has his/her
arms around your upper half. If your
wearing heels or shoes such as heavy
heel boots, this is especially effective.
Move your foot near the attacker's, lift
your foot up and bring it down on their
foot as hard as you can. If they let you
go run, if they don't try the next one.

KICK OR GRAB THE GRONIN

OF MALE ATTACKER
Bringing a knee sharply into the groin of
an attacker or grabbing the groin with your
hand and twisting is an instantly effective
move that will take your attacker down.
Again, this isn't the time to worry about
fighting dirty. If your life is in danger, go for
the groin. If this doubles up your opponent,
consider smashing your knee into his nose
to ensure that he'll be down for the count.

THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY

TO DEFEND YOURSELF IS
FOLLOW UP!
(JOIN THE LESSON OF SELF
DEFENSE) ~
THE MARTIAL ARTS

GUARD YOUR FACE

the attacker is trying to punch you
or grab you from the front, put your
hands on your forehead in a "Not in
the face!" sort of gesture and your
arms tight on your body. This may
look like a weak defensive position,
but that is to your advantage since it
brings your opponent's guard down.
In addition, this position protects your
face and your ribs, two places you'll
likely want to protect.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR

EVERYONE TO TAKE SELF
DEFENSE CLASSES?

1. IT BUILDS
CONFIDENCE
One of the biggest advantages to taking
self defense classes is the way it makes
you feel afterwards. A lot of people are
unconfident with their abilities to protect
themselves before they join a practice, or
take classes. This can be due to personal
experiences, as well as driven by the
news. We hear a lot about the negativity in
our society, and this can leave people
feeling unprotected. Self defense classes
will build confidence in yourself. If you are
getting bullied, it is also a great way to
protect yourself and grow confidence in

2.IT HELPS DEVELOP

SELF-DISCIPLINE
In order to learn and grow with your self defense
abilities, you have to develop self-discipline. You have
to be motivated and dedicated to the practice. In
order to be better protected-you have to keep
practicing. Actually going to class and showing up on
a regular basis develops discipline. Taking these types
of classes will get you focused on your personal
protection and on your surroundings. Like with any
other sport, you cant get better if you dont practice.
The only discipline that lasts, is self-discipline. -Bum
Phillips.

3.IT IMPROVES YOUR

STREET AWARNESS
Self defense classes will make you more aware
of your surroundings. Youre never planning to
be attacked, but your attacker is the one with
the plan. Self defense classes will help you to
be aware at all times and ready, should this
type of situation arise. You might be shocked
for a second, but you will have the necessary
reactions to protect yourself. These classes
teach you to think about where you can be
attacked and where your attacker could be
hiding. Always be aware of your surroundings.

4.IT TEACHES YOU

SELF-RESPECT
The practice of karate, and many other practices
like it, are centered around trust and respect. It
teaches respect of each other, and respect for
yourself. This is beneficial in life. If you dont
respect yourself, then how can you respect others?
When you are practicing your self defense moves
you will be practicing with a partner. There needs
to be mutual trust between the two of you to not
hurt each other, but still practice well. If you do not
respect yourself it is unlikely that others will
respect you and have that mutual trust.

5.IT HELPS TO DEVELOP

YOUR SURVIVAL SPIRIT
Self defense classes can prepare
you for battle and, most
importantly, survival. If you are
attacked, you dont want to go to a
secondary location, and having self
defense on your side will help
prevent that from happening. You
will have a sense of I am going to
survive here, not giving up my life.

6.IT HAS A POSITIVE

INFLUENCE TO YOUR LIFE
Unlike a lot of things in life, taking self
defense classes will always have a positive
impact on your life. Each and every one of
the reasons above areproof of this. Taking
self defense classes can boost your spirits
and make you a more confident and better
version of yourself. Its important to have
things in life that we can rely on to make us
happy- taking these kinds of classes does
just that.
