Project Introduction
Application:Shut down can be defined as scheduled down period for a plant for
scheduled maintenance for an extended period of time.
Shutdowns provide unique opportunities to a maintenance
department not normally available during standard operation or even
during short shutdown periods.
A large work is required to schedule into a relatively short period of
time.
The process of project management is generally applied to a
maintenance shutdown in coal handling plant of thermal power
stations.

BASIC CONCEPTS OF PLANNING

1:Determine your objective:Once an organization is developed its mission statement, its next step is to develop
the specific objective that are focused on achieving that mission. Objectives are the
specific measurable results of the initiative. An organizations objectives often specifies
of how much of what will be accomplished by when.
There are 3 basic types of objectives. They are:
Behavioral objectives.
ppp
Community level outcome objectives.
Process objectives.
2:Plan necessary activities:
Decide what major activities must be performed in order to achieve the objectives in
general and specific.
Questions every proposed activitiesIs it necessary?
Is it important?
Why?

3: organize your action plan:

Make a checklist of all important things that must be done.
Arrange them in order of priorities.
Identify essential steps.
When it should be done?
Why is necessary?
Where should it be done?
What should be done?
Who should do it?
How should it be done?
4: prepare a time table:
Prepare a routine/schedule according to the action plan.
Mention completion time of all jobs.

09

Process planning aims at developing a comprehensive plan manufacturing a part or a

product.
This has two segments:
1: Functional
2: Line Operation
1: FUNCTIONAL PLANNING

Number of parts required to make the product.

Estimation of cost involved for alternative route of making or buying.

Once a decision is made on those parts that will be made-their sequence of operation.

Skill and no. of operators to be assigned to the job.

Information for design, control of operation and productivity.

MASTER PRODUCTION PLAN(MONTHLY TARGETS)

A master production schedule(MPS) is a plan for individual commodities to be produced in each
time period such as production, staffing, inventory etc.
It is usually linked to manufacturing where the plan indicates when and how much of each
product will be demanded.
An example of a master production schedule for product A.

PLANNING AND CONTROL IN INTERMITTENT OPERATION:

Intermittent operation is normally a process where a variety of products or parts are produced, each
necessitating a certain sequence of operation.

PLANNING AND CONTROL OF SPECIAL PROJECTS

When a project involves many activities and some of them are to be
performed simultaneously, those are planned and controlled by special
planning methods and diagramming techniques called networking.
Among the ,the most important planning method used is PERT.
Independently there exists, another planning method called CPM(critical
path method). Both systems are similar and the extended use of both PERT
& CPM over year eliminated some the differences that originally
distinguished one for the other.

CPM(Critical path method)

Critical path method (CPM) is a project modeling technique developed in the late 1950s by
Morgan R.Walker and James E. Kelley.
CPM is commonly used with all forms of projects, including construction, aerospace and
defense, software development, research projects, product development, engineering, and plant
maintenance, among others.
Any project with interdependent activities can apply this method of mathematical analysis,
although the original CPM program and approach is no longer used, the term generally applied
to any approach used to analyze a project network logic diagram.

ESSENTIAL TECHNIQUES FOR USING CPM

>A list of all activities required to complete the project
work breakdown structure).

(typically categorized within a

>The time (duration) that each activity will take to complete.

>The dependencies between the activities and logical end points such as milestones or
deliverable items.

016

PLANNING SEQUENCE CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS

1: Identify the activities needed to complete a certain project.
2: Determine which activities can run concurrently and which can only be started after another
activity is terminated.
3: Draw the network diagram, using the principle shown in the figure below.
4: Calculate the time required to complete each activity and indicate this on the diagram.
5: Determine the total time for completing the project, this is the longest path on the network and
is called the critical path.
6: Calculate the costs needed for each activity, if it were to be carried out at a normal pace, or at a
crush or accelerated pace,(say be using more people or more resources).
7: Balance the use of resources-even out upsurges in their use.

DISTRIBUTION AND COORDINATION

Organization Of Maintenance

: The organization of maintenance involves two keys

issues:
The organization of the maintenance function that is
performed by the maintenance specialists.
: Changing attitudes in an enterprise to develop and
maintenance conscious and supportive attitude.

STAGES OF PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

In preventive maintenance scheme maintenance

activities/stages are classified into four stages:
I: Inspection
S: Small Repair
M: Medium Repair
C: Complete Overhaul

Diploma in Mechatronics/cp15/RNTC/

019

INSPECTION:
Following activities are brought under inspection:
External inspection for proper functioning of all the mechanism at
all speeds and feeds.
Regulation and adjustments of couplings, clutches, spindle
bearings, wedges and clamping plates or smooth sliding breaks,
lead, and nut play.
Cleaning oil and coolant filters, lubricators lubricating distributors,
chips or dust from guides.
Tightening of all bolts and nuts and replacing damaged ones.
Replacing of oils.

Diploma in Mechatronics/cp15/RNTC/

020

Inspection are normally carried in between two small repairs(S) or in

between small repair(s) and medium repair(M) or small repair(s) and
complete overhaul(c).
Small repair: small repair includes all the actions under inspection and the
following activities:
Small sub-assembly which are under possibility of excessively worn out
or dirty is taken out of the machine and is assembled completely part wise,
cleaning out the parts, restoring/replacing of worn out parts. Some of the
examples are tool post of lathe machine.
Restoration of oil pockets on the guide surface, if necessary.

Diploma in Mechatronics/cp15/RNTC/

021

Medium repair:
All the operations under small repair but more number of units are accepted
to repair for example in case of lathe machine, medium repair can be done
by repairing head stock, apron, tool post, tail post, tail stock etc.
Scraping/grinding of all guide surfaces, if it requires.
Painting of external surfaces of machine.
Accuracy test of machine.

MAINTENANCE : SCOPE AND IMPORTANCE

The scope of maintenance : The maintenance function has not always
received the importance it deserves. It is sometimes looked upon as an
ancillary activity that perform sporadically and when necessary some feel
that stopping a machine for inspection or routine maintenance is an
unnecessary nuisance, it is only when a breakdown occurs, the importance of
maintenance becomes apparent.
1. Losses incurred due to poor maintenance include :
2. Loss of production due to stoppage of machine.
3. Cost of product defect.
4. Losses due to shorter machine life.
5. Payment to manpower during a breakdown.
6. Total stoppage of the production line, due to failure of a small component,
since the entire line is interlinked.
Diploma in Mechatronics/cp15/RNTC/

23

There are two major types of maintenance :

Break down maintenance: this is a responsive approach by the
maintenance section requests for repairs, because of earlier machine or
equipment failure or inconsistent / unsafe due to poor condition of machine.
In this case the maintenance people tries to respond as best as it can in the
least possible time.
Preventive maintenance : the approach is based on the well known
wisdom hat prevention is better than cure.
It consists of
Diagnosing the maintenance needs such as lubrication / greasing , replacing
non metallic parts-filters, gaskets, wipers etc.
Schedule to plan systematic interventions of maintenance and repair to
prevent breakdown.
