In what ways does my media product use, develop or challenge the forms and
conventions of real media products?

Uses: My media product uses the conventions of real media products well. Such as we
use three characters all with different personalities. This is similar to American pie. I.E we
had a tough guy character typified as the “jock” character in American pie. A stupid
dunce like character that often uses slapstick humor to get cheap laughs. Slapstick humor
is another convention of the comedy genre that we have used to our advantage. Finally
we used a posh sensible type character, this type of character is evident in most teen
movies including Ferris Bueller and American pie.

Additionally we used the conventions of comedy films through the use of costumes. We
used a tight black jacket on the tough guy to emphasize his power and authority amongst
the group. The stupid character dresses casually to show that he has few worries in his
life, and finally the posh character is dressed smartly in an obvious fashion to show his
status as the smarter more mature of the group.

Furthermore we filmed all of our opening in bright lighting conditions. However we

had to use daylight. If we had a larger budget then we would have been able to
use bright lighting settings all of the time, yet we had to make do with what we
had.

Finally we used the convention of establishing the relationship between the

three characters through the use of a long shot and them all meeting up. This is
a common way of showing the relationship between the three characters in
several teen movies including American pie where they meet outside the shop.
How does my media product represent different social groups?

My media product represents social groups mostly through the use of costume. The choice
of clothing that we used showed that these were just like any other teenagers our age.
This was easy for us to adhere to as of course we are all teenager and this meant that
we already had the clothes available. If we were to make the film with a bigger budget
we would have possibly been able to emphasise the characters persona’s more
thoroughly as we would be able to have the resources to show different subcultures
throughout teenage life. Such as gothic in films such as twilight or gangster in
kidulthood.

What kind of media institution might distribute my product?

The type of institution that would distribute

our product would be mainstream
companies such as universal pictures that
distributed American pie. With a bigger
budget our product would be able to
meet all of the conventions of the comedy
genre. I also feel that our film would be
profitable as films such as Ferris Bueller
and American pie are enjoyed by people
of all age groups as the genre is a widely
enjoyed film type.
I don’t feel that our product would be as
successful if it was distributed by a smaller
British independent distributor such as
amber films because it is a hard field to
brake into.
Who would be the audience for my media product?

The audience for my product would be teenagers.

It may lean slightly lean towards boys, as the
smut and mischievous wrong doings often
common in films such as American pie.
I believe however that my audience would be
towards the later end of the teens (15+) as
many of the conventions of a teen comedy
involve sexual matters that are inappropriate
for those under these ages. We had to take
this factor into account when conducting our
questionnaire. We chose to ask pupils from
our 6th form which meant that everyone was
at least 16 years of age. This meant that the
factors that we took into account when
producing our film were the views of people
the same age as us. This in turn shows that
our product was designed for people of a
similar age to ourselves.
How did I attract/address my audience?

I attracted our audience through the use of using the secretary several times. If you
noticed, at the beginning of our production the film fades in and out of each of our
characters. Every single time when they are fading it comes up with a shot of the
school secretary looking at her watch whilst we are getting ready. This entices the
audience to continue to watch.
Furthermore whilst each of the characters are preparing for their day this makes
the audience want to know where they are going to go. This ideal is furthered
through the short long shot of the three characters meeting up, establishing a
relationship. This makes the audience feel attracted to find out what is about to
happen.

What I’ve learnt about technologies through the process of making my
product.

Whilst I have been making my media product I have learnt essentially how to use the
camera equipment and how to use the editing machines.
Firstly with the camera I have learnt how to use different shot types to give
different representations of people and the relationships between people, this
was vital in our practical piece in order to establish the difference between our
characters. We used close ups so that the audience could see the minor details
that our characters were doing such as our mean character brushing his teeth
harder, the stupid character spraying deodorant in his eyes and finally the posh
character smoothing his hair completely over to one side.
Looking back from my preliminary task I have learnt.

Looking back from my preliminary task I have learnt several aspects from all
over the media subject. I have learnt several different new shot types such as
long shot, high and angle and establishing shots.
Additionally I have learnt several aspects of the editing side of media. I
have learnt that through the use of editing styles such as ellipses and
juxtapositions you are able to give representations of people.
