Topic 2 - Basic Conversion of SI Units To English and Vice Versa

This document provides an overview of converting between SI and English units of measurement. It defines measuring units and the process of conversion between systems. The two main systems discussed are the International System of Units (SI) and the English system. Examples of base units for each system are given for length, mass, time, temperature and other quantities. Prefixes used in the SI system are also defined. The document concludes with examples of converting between units using conversion factors and tables.

Basic Conversion of SI Units

to English Units and vice versa
(TOPIC 2)

What is Measuring Units?

It is used as a standard of measurement of the
physical quantity of things.
Ex:
1 kilogram or 1kg
1 inch or 1 in
2 meters of 2m
3 pounds of 3 lbs.

What is Conversion?
Conversion - is the process of changing or causing
the measuring units to change from one system or
form to another.
TOPIC 2 : Basic Conversion of SI Units to English Units

Why is it needed to do Conversion for

Measuring Units?
It is commonly needed to convert one unit to another
for there are two systems of interpreting the
measuring units.

What is that TWO SYSTEMS OF

MEASUREMENT?
The two systems that we are talking about is the SI
(System International) and the other one is the
English System.

What is (System International)

Measurement?

The International System of Units

(abbreviated as SI) is a scientific
method of expressing the magnitudes
of quantities of important natural
phenomena. This system was started
by European Union as their standard
for measurement. There are seven SI
base Units as fundamentals.

What is English Measurement?

The English System of Units are

historical units of measurement used
in England. The units were redefined
in the United Kingdom by Weights
and Measures Act, which retained
many but not all of the unit names
and redefined some of the definitions.
