Welcome To IEN 754: Reliability and Maintainability Engineering

This document outlines the course IEN 754 which covers reliability and maintainability engineering concepts. The course covers 10 topics including reliability models, reliability of systems, design for reliability, maintainability, reliability testing, and case studies. Key terms defined include reliability as the probability of failure-free performance over time, maintainability as the probability an item can be repaired within a given time, and availability as the probability a system is operational at a given time. The review section lists important probability and distribution concepts covered in the course.

Reliability Definitions
It is the probability of failure-free
performance over a given period of time
under stated conditions.

Key Terms
Probability:
A measure of the likelihood of observing an
event.
Failure:
The event in which any item or part of an
item does not, or would not perform its
intended function.

Key Terms
Time:
The universal measure of duration, defined
relative to the function performed;
calendar/clock time, operating hours, cycles,
etc.
Conditions:
A set of operational conditions including;
design loads, environmental effects and
maintenance procedures.

Quality and Reliability

Quality is generally defined as the totality of
features and characteristics of a product or
service that bear on its ability to satisfy
given needs.
Reliability is a time dependent
characteristic.
Reliability may be viewed as the quality of
the products operational performance over
time.

Maintainability
Is the probability that a failed component or
system will be repaired to a specified
condition within a given period of time,
following a stated procedures.

Key Terms
Repairable Item:
An item which can be restored to perform all
of its required functions by corrective
maintenance.
Time:
Expressed in clock time and includes hands-on
repair time (excluding any delay).

Key Terms
Repair/Restoration:
All actions performed as a result of failure, to
restore an item to a specified condition.
These can include any or all of the following
steps: localization, isolation, disassembly,
interchange, re-assembly, alignment and
checkout.

Availability
Is the probability that a component or system
is operational at a given point in time when
used under stated conditions.
[Used for repairable systems]

Availability
This is a comprehensive measure of
performance which accounts for both the
probability of failure-free operation
(reliability) and the probability of repair
(maintainability).
