Africa Optical Network.

WDM/SDH Ring
WDM links with OADM, along with SDH ADMs.
Over all ring length 40,000km, nodes at 40 Countries.
2 fiber pairs, each fiber carries STM-16 data at
2.5Gb/s.
Hub nodes central offices
Access nodes Cable stations
8 OADMS (Branching Units) in underwater link
Protection: if there is a fiber cut on link between two
hub nodes , the access nodes between two hubs can
still reach one of the hub nodes

(All-optical Network Consortium)

Static Wavelength Routing testbed

Level 0 LAN, Level 1- MAN
20 wavelengths spaced 50 GHz
Odd numbered wavelengths are used in level 0
Even Numbered wavelengths are used in level 1
A service Simple circuit switched light paths
B service Circuit switched service provides pre
assigned time slots on light path
C Service Datagram service , runs as
broadband Ethernet
Demonstrates the value of hierarchical
architecture.

3. NTT Ring Testbed

Unidirectional Ring
1 Working fiber, 1 protection fiber.
Unidirectional path switched SONET ring(UPSR).
One Hub (Center) node, Many Access (Remote) nodes.
Protection:
1. If Working fiber is lost, protection fiber will loop the
traffic
2. 1+1 path protection where same traffic is sent on both
the working and protection fibers in opposite directions
6 wavelengths, 100Ghz apart, dispersion shifted fiber,
distance 40 km, 622Mb/s .
Optical amplifiers, Multichannel power equalizers.
Demonstration of WDM transmission over disp.shift. fiber,
along with protection mechanisms.

4.MWTN
(Multi-wavelength Transport
N/W)

Reconfigurable wavelength routing testbeds.

Channel selection is done by electronic thin film based
filters
Channel powers were equalized using separate
attenuators for each channel
Protection - each wavelength carry a pilot tone used to
detect and solve failure
4 wavelengths spaced 4nm apart, each wavelength
carrying SDH data 622 Mb/s or 2.5Gb/s
Testbed consists of 2 OXCs, an OXC and an OADM or 2
OADMs.
Demonstrates Feasibility of all optical wavelength
routing, with features of cross connects., pilot tone
approach,TMN based management.

5. ONTC
(Optical Network Technology
Consortium)
Reconfigurable wavelength routing
architecture.
2 interconnected Unidirectional rings.
4 wavelengths, 4 nm apart, SMF, distance of
150km, at 155Mb/s, ATM Traffic.
EDFA after each node to compensate
failures
Each node has 10-dB coupler
Demonstrates the use of an ATM virtual
topology layer over Optical layer,
transparency over data.

OADM
Ring
2 fiber ring with OADMs.
Interesting mix of optical switching & electronic
regenerators.
Regenerators provide wavelength converrsion,
retime the signal.
Demux spilitter followed by fiber fabry parot
filter.
Switches - optomechanical switches.
3 nodes, 4 wavelengths, 200GHz apart, SDH
data at 2.5 Gb/s
Line switching for protection.
Electronically regeneration at each node,
increases no. of nodes in cascade.

Local ring network with OADM
interconnected to a long-distance
network via an OXC.
8 wavelenghts, 200Ghz apart, 2.5Gb/s
per wavelength.
Operational issues are handled well
handling , monitoring and
management, being robust against
outages, developing field ready
