Presentation On: Power Flow Control On Transmission Line Using UPFC

This document presents a presentation on using a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) to control power flow on a transmission line. It introduces the UPFC as the most flexible FACTS device, consisting of two voltage source converters connected by a common DC link. The objectives of using a UPFC are to control active and reactive power flow on the transmission line and improve voltage profiles at the receiving end. Diagrams are included to illustrate the schematic and operating principles of the UPFC, showing how it can inject a controlled voltage in series with the line to regulate power flow. Recorded data demonstrates how the UPFC increases active power, reactive power, and terminal voltage across a load.

INTRODUCTION
Power demand is increasing day by day so new

lines are to be installed.

Installing new lines may not be suitable because
of economic and enviromental condition.
Facts device can be used to solve that problem.
It helps in optimum loading of line.

Various facts devices

Static Synchronous Compensator(STATCOM)
Static synchronous Series Compensator(SSSC)
Unified power flow controller(UPFC)

UPFC
Universal and most flexible of all other facts

devices
Combination of 3 compensators
-impedance
-voltage magnitude
-phase angle
Consists of two voltage source converters;
-series converter
-shunt converter
Converters are connected by a common dc
link.

OBJECTIVES
The main objectives of using UPFC on
transmission line are followings
To control the active and reactive power flow
through the transmission line.
To improve the voltage profiles at receiving
end.

ADVANTAGES
Can control active and reactive power.
No moving part present so less maintenance.
The operation mode can be changed from

one state to another without having hardware

alteration.
Improve voltage regulation.

Upfc-schematic diagram

Operating principle of
upfc
Consists of two voltage source converter

(VSCs) sharing a common dc storage

capacitor.
VSCs are connected to the power system

through coupling transformers.

One VSC is connected in shunt to the

transmission system via a shunt transformer.

The other one is connected in series through a
series transformer.

Components
series inverter
It injects an AC voltage Vse with controllable

magnitude and phase angle (0 360) in

series with the line.
The injected voltage acts as a synchronous
voltage source and when line current flows
through this voltage source exchange of real
and reactive power between it and ac system
takes place.
The real power must be supplied to it.

Shunt converter
It supplies the real power demanded by the

series device at the dc link.

It can also absorb or generate the controllable
reactive power.
It is used for maintaining the voltage of dc
link constant
Balances the real power flow exchanged
between the series inverter and the
transmission line.

Recorded data after using UPFC

Across load 2:
Active power=720 watts.
Reactive power= 453 watts.
Terminal voltage= 224 volts (Peak)
Hence ,
Increased active power = 720-621=99 watts.
Incrased reactive power = 453-391= 62 vars.
Increased terminal voltage= 224-210=14 volts
