Statistics Powerpoint Presentation - Regression

This document summarizes two studies. The first study analyzed the relationship between sales, cost of sales, advertising expenses, and manpower at a plastic products firm. It found positive relationships between sales and cost of sales and manpower, and a negative relationship between sales and advertising expenses. The second study examined factors affecting mathematics and statistics performance among University of the East students. It found that time spent traveling to school, study time, attitude, and high school math performance most impacted performance. Both used regression analysis and found their regression models to be good predictors.

SUMMARY

TITLE

A. A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS ON
THE SALES OF A PLASTIC
PRODUCT FIRM: A MICRO
LEVEL APPROACH
By: Julita Araneta Presbitero
University of the East
March 1983

PROBLEM
A.
To determine the relationship between
the sales and the cost of sales,
advertising expense and manpower. In
addition to this, it was desired to
determine the over-all effect of the cost of
sales,
advertising
expenses
and
manpower on the sales of the plastic
products.

OBJECTIVE
A.

The objective of the study are: first,

to evaluate over-all effect of the three
factors
namely;
cost
of
sales,
advertising expense and man power on
the sales of the company. Second, to
determine the relationship existing
between the sales of the company with
the cost of sales, advertising expense
and man power.

HYPOTHESIS
A.
Ho: There is no difference between the
sales of the plastic products.
Ha: There is a difference between the
sales of the plastic products.

METHOD
A.
Statistical methods refer to those
procedures and techniques used in the
collection, presentation, analysis and
interpretation of quantitative data. The
study will carry out different statistical
methods and techniques which are
appropriate in the analysis of the business
world. One method that was used is the
fitting of the regression model with the
use of the multiple linear regression
model and non-linear regression model.

STATISTICAL TOOLS
APPLIED
A. Regression

Since the study involves three

independent variables, the model used
is multiple linear regression model
which takes the form:
Y= 0 + 1X1+ 2X2+ 3X3+

A.

RESULTS

Based on the findings, the multiple linear

regression model showed a positive and a negative
regression coefficient. Cost of production and man
power showed a positive linear relationship between
sales. While advertising expenses with a negative
regression coefficient showed a reverse linear
relationship on sales. The coefficient of determination
R^2= 99.61% revealed to be significant. This means
that the variation in sales is explained by the
regression equation. Also, this shows that cost of sales,
advertising expenses and manpower are good
predictors of the changes in the values of sales.
Further tests showed that cost of sales was found to
be a significant factor in the prediction of sales.
Advertising expenses and manpower contributes little
additional information.
Although the significance of the equation indicates

CRITIQUE:

A.
If anyone would like to do the
same study, the focus of the
researcher in the sales of the plastic
products should be on other factors
that affects it. We recommend using
a different approach of predicting
and analyzing the sales of the
plastic products.

SUMMARY
B. A STUDY ON FACTORS

AFFECTING THE
PERFORMANCE IN
MATHEMATICS AND
STATISTICS SUBJECTS OF
B.S. STATISTICS
STUDENTS OF THE
UNIVERSITY OF THE EAST
By: Lilian L. Malabanan
University of the East
March 1984

PROBLEM

B.

This study attempts to find which of the

factors or which of the combination of these
factors, namely: age, weekly allowance, no. of
hours spent in studying mathematics and
statistics subjects per week, manner of
studying, place of study, general average in
H.S., performance in math in H.S., sex,
residence while studying attitude toward the
course, membership in organization working or
not average time spent in travelling from place
to school, are the beats in predicting the
performance in mathematics and statistics
subject. The study aims also to know whether

OBJECTIVE
B.
The objective of the study are the following:
1.

To determine which of the thirteen selected factors affects most

the performance in math and statistics subjects. These factor are
the following:

a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
f.
g.
h.
i.
j.
k.
l.
m.

Age
Weekly allowance
No. of hours spent in studying math and stat subjects per week
Manner of studying
Place of study
General average in high school
Performance of math in high school
Sex
Residence while studying
Attitude toward the course
Membership in organization
Working or not
Average time spent in travelling from place to school

2.To give some recommendation that maybe helpful to the

students performance in statistics and math subjects.

HYPOTHESIS
B.
Ho: There is no difference between the
factors affecting mathematics students
and statistics students of B.S. Statistics
students of the University of the East.
Ha: There is a difference between the
factors affecting mathematics students
and statistics students of B.S. Statistics
students of the University of the East.

METHOD
B.
The method used in this study is
descriptive method. The study employs a
regression and correlational analysis of
the two general types of variables the
dependent and independent variable.

STATISTICAL TOOLS
APPLIED
Regression

B.

RESULTS

There exists a highly significant relationship

between the performance in mathematics and
statistics subject and the thirteen independent
variable namely: age of the student, weekly allowance,
number of hours spent in studying, place of study,
performance in mathematics subjects in High School,
sex, general average in High School, residence while
studying, attitude toward the course, membership in
organization, working or not and the average time
spent in traveling from place to school.
Of the thirteen independent variables the average
time spent in travelling from place to school is the
factor that greatly affected the performance of
students in the subjects mathematics and statistics.
Next to it are average time spent in studying the
subjects, attitude toward the course and the
performance in mathematics in High School

Once a student had good performance

in mathematics in High School, he will
surely succeed in college but he must
devote much time in studying his lesson
and he must have a positive attitude
toward the course he was taking.
