1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge

forms and conventions of real media products?
During our production we used a number of codes and conventions
from thriller films such as The Call & Taken allowing us to
produce an opening sequence with a chilling element to it. In our
production we used of the 5 Barthes Codes; this was the
hermeneutic code, this refers to any element in a story that is not
explained and therefore creating an enigma for the audience, we
incorporated this as throughout the sequence the audience are
unaware of the kidnappers identity or his motive for snatching the
young girl from her bedroom in the night.
During brainstorming we decided the main theme we wanted to
incorporate into the production was kidnap as this is a stereotypical
theme of a thriller film, we determined that this would be best as it
would be easier to reproduce successfully as these type of films tend
to do very well and create suspense and tension for the audience.
However, even though we used a typical theme we still made it
original as we added in own ideas that would make it stand out from
an expected film.

Location
Throughout our whole sequence the only location we used for filming
was the house, in most thriller films the primary location is not the
house, however as the theme is kidnap which is part of the Thriller
genre this fits the convention as typically kidnaps tend to occur in a
house as we realised from a thriller called Taken. Whilst
brainstorming we decided this would be an ideal location as it fits into
the storyline of a child being kidnapped on her sisters watch and
therefore adds a sense of a realism.
Although there are certain key features of a Thriller that our film
doesnt follow such as there is no abandoned or haunted house as
these are likely settings for a thriller to be filmed. As we live in a
modern city we knew it would be difficult to find a derelict building for
filming that would create a haunting effect and because of this just
filmed in a regular house.

Title of the film

The title for our film is Stalked it tells the story of an 8 year old girl who
is kidnapped from her bedroom one night whilst her older sister leaves her
home alone to go meet someone. We chose this title for the film because
it depicts the 90 minute films storyline which is explained in the synopsis.
We thought this title for the film would work well because it could create a
sense of mystery for the viewers as the theme of stalking is not presented
in the sequence however is in the whole 90 minute film. The title of our
opening sequence is shown at the end of the sequence.

Title font and style

The colour of the font was white and called Lucida Bright, this is a simple
yet bold colour and connotes innocence which could be used to represent
the young girl Rosie. However, the black background contrasts innocence
as it could represent the danger and frightening aspect present in the film.

Camerawork and Editing

In our opening sequence we attempted to incorporate as many
different shots and angles as possible. Some of the shots and
angles include close up shots to focus on emotions such as fear,
over the shoulder shots so the audience can be in the characters
position and eye level shots to focus on a character.
Editing allowed us to create screen effects in the film to alter the
colour so it looked grey in order to create a haunting effect in
order to fit the codes and conventions of a thriller film.

Costumes and Props

The costume of our protagonist Rosie follows the stereotypical
convention of a young girl in a thriller, she is wearing cartoon pyjamas,
this costume highlights her vulnerability to the audience as she is
portrayed and innocent and childish. We decided that this costume
would also be most suitable as it worked with the films narrative
because she was kidnapped whilst she was sleeping in bed.
The main prop used in our sequence was the musical jewellery box, the
se music boxes are typically used more in horror films than thriller films
because they create more of a haunting and creepy theme which is
more obvious in a horror film.

Genre/Story Opening
The first sequence starts with a close up shot of Ella (Rosies older
sister) tying her shoe laces and then leaving the house, this creates a
sense of mystery for the audience as they wonder where she is going
and why she looks so flustered. The next scene is a close up of Rosie
sleeping in her bed indicating to the audience that her irresponsible
older sister has left her alone in the house during the night this creates
sympathy for Rosie. The opening of our sequence does not make it
evident to the audience that our film is going to be a thriller.
