Multi-Criteria Decision Making (TOPSIS)

This document discusses using the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method to select the best material for a roll cage design for an all-terrain vehicle. It provides background on material selection and MCDM (Multiple Criteria Decision Making) methods. The document outlines the TOPSIS steps and compares research applying it to other material selection problems. It then justifies using steel and identifies attributes and alternatives to apply TOPSIS for this roll cage application. The goal is to select the optimal steel grade material based on attributes like strength, density, cost and chemistry.

INTRODUCTION
Why there is a need for material selection?
Engineering design is increasingly driven by
the objectives of performance, cost and
environmental sensitivity which are limited by
materials. One aspect of the optimized product
design is that of selecting the materials that
best meet the need of design, maximizing its
performance and minimizing its cost.

MULTIPLE CRITERIA DECISION MAKING

( MCDM )

A single decision making is to choose

among a countable or uncountable set
of alternatives using two or more
(multiple) criteria.

MADM - It stands for

Multiple Attribute Decision
Making . These problems
are assumed to have a
predetermined and limited
number of decision
alternatives .

MODM It stands for Multiple

Objective Decision Making . The
decision alternatives are not
given. instead the set of decision
alternatives is explicitly defined
by constraints using multiple
objective programming. The
number of potential decision
alternatives may be large.

TYPES OF MCDM TECHNIQUES :

SAW (Simple Additive Weighting)

TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity
to the Ideal Solution)
ELECTRE (Elimination et Choice Translating Reality)
BNBF (Bayesian Network Based Framework)
AHP (The Analytical Hierarchy Process)
SMART (The Simple Multi Attribute Rating Technique )
ANP (Analytic network process)

OBJECTIVE :- To select the best available

material in the market for Roll-Cage
design of an All Terrain Vehicle using
TOPSIS method.

CURRENT PROGRESS :- We are in the

initial part of our project. We have read
various articles and research of different
people regarding our topic. Moreover we
are in a position to apply the TOPSIS
method on different attributes considered
by us.

TOPSIS METHOD
The Technique for Order Preference by
Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is a multicriteria decision analysis method, which was
originally developed by Hwang and Yoon in
1981.
TOPSIS is based on the concept that the
chosen alternative should have the shortest
geometric distance from the ideal solution.

WHY TOPSIS ? ?

It applies easy decision making

using both positive and negative
criteria.

Number of criteria can be applied

in this decision process.

Its simpler and faster than AHP and

SAW.

The TOPSIS method is carried out as

follows:
STEP 1 : Create an evaluation matrix x ij,
consisting of m
alternatives and n criteria.
STEP 2 : Construct a normalized decision matrix.
STEP 3 : Construct the weighted normalized
matrix.
STEP 4 : Determine the ideal solution and
negative ideal
solution.

STEP 5 : Calculate the separation measures.

The distance between the ideal point and each
alternative and the distance between non ideal point
and each alternative can be calculated using following
equation :

where, vij = weighted standardized criterian value

vj+ = ideal value
vj- = negative ideal value

STEP 6 : Calculate the relative closeness to

the ideal
point and this is given by the
following
equation:-

Select the option with Ci closest to 1.

WHY ATV AND ITS ROLL CAGE ? ?

Apart from racing and sports sector, this

vehicle find its use in many areas like in
Agriculture, military services , emergency
medical services , border patrol, forestry etc.
Roll Cage acts a good protection to the driver
safety in case of accident and it enforce the
chassis giving it a more rigid base reducing
the amount of suspension geometry change
It also imparts aesthetically pleasing look to
an ATV.

WHY STEEL FOR ROLL CAGE

DESIGN? ?

Cheap.

Better weld ability.

Formability is good.

No extra fabrication panel cost.

On average it is 2x times more stronger than its

rival-aluminum.

ATTRIBUTES SELECTED FOR THESE MATERIAL

Important attribute of the material

considered in this project are:1.) Tensile strength.
2.) Yield Strength.
3.) Density.
4.) Carbon Content.
5.) Chromium Content.
6.) Cost.

MATERIAL SELECTED FOR ROLLCAGE DESIGN

Best Steel grade material available for

Roll Cage are as follows:1.)
2.)
3.)
4.)

AISI 1018
AISI 1026
AISI 4130
ASTM A 106 grade B Steel.
