INTERNET

INTERNET
A means of connecting a computer to any other computer
anywhere in the world via dedicated routers and servers. When
two computers are connected over the Internet, they can send
and receive all kinds of information such as text, graphics,
voice, video,
and computer
programs.
The Internet is a
global network connecting millions of computers. More than
100 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and
opinions. According to Internet World Stats, as of December
31, 2011 there was an estimated 2,267,233,742 Internet users
worldwide. The number of Internet users represents 32.7
percent of the world's population.

KEY POINTS

It is a collection of interconnected networks, all freely


exchanging information.

It is a "network of networks" that includes millions of


private and public, academic, business, and government
networks (local or Global),linked by copper wires,
wireless connections, and other technologies.

How Internet Works


The Internet transmits data from one computer (called a host) to
another.
If the receiving computer is on a network to which the first
computer is directly connected, it can send the message directly.
If the receiving computer is not on a network to which the
sending computer is connected, the sending computer relays the
message to another computer that can forward it.

Modem
Device that enables computers to communicate through
phone lines. Computer information is stored digitally,
whereas information transmitted over telephone lines is
transmitted in the form of analog waves. A modem
converts between this two forms.

multiple data types.
Software
Two types of softwares required to enable your PC as an
Internet PC.

Communication software to establish connection.

Disadvantages of Internet

Theft of personal information such as name, address, credit card


number etc.
Virus threats nothing but a program which disrupts the normal
functioning of your system.
Spamming refers to receiving unwanted e-mails in bulk, which
provide no purpose and needlessly obstruct the entire system.

Though, internet can also create havoc, destruction and its


misuse can be very fatal,
the advantages of it outweigh its disadvantages.

INTRANET

INTRANET
Intranet is an internal network. It is used by companies to
connect their computers on a network. It is a network
based on TCP/IP protocols (an internet) belonging to an
organization, usually a corporation, accessible only by the
organization's members, employees, or others with
authorization. An intranet's Web sites look and act just like
any other Web sites, but the firewall surrounding an
intranet fends off unauthorized access.

KEY POINTS

Internal company network that uses Internet standards


(HTML, HTTP & TCP/IP protocols) & software.

Accessed only by authorized persons, especially members


or employees of the organization.

Provides employees with an easy and intuitive approach to


access information.

Intranet Security
Two levels of Security required:

Internal
It can be imposed by Public Key Security & Encryption
Key.

External
Through Firewall.

What is Firewall ?

Security device located between firms internal network


(intranet) & external network (internet).

Regulates access into & out of a companys network


based on a set of rules.
Note : needs to be upgraded from time to time to check latest
potential security problems.

Applications of Intranet

Sharing of company policies/rules & regulations.


Access employee database.
Distribution of circulars/Office Orders.
Access product & customer data.
Sharing of information of common interest.
Launching of personal/departmental home pages.
Submission of reports .
Corporate telephone directories.

EXTRANET

EXTRANET
Extranet is an internal network that can be accessed
externally. The extranet can be thought as an extension of
the companys intranet. People from outside the company
can have a limited access to the companys internal
network for business or education related purposes. The
access may be granted to the organizations partners,
vendors, suppliers, current and potential customers, etc.

KEY POINTS

Extranet is a network based on Web technologies


that links selected resources of a companys intranet
with its customers ,suppliers, customers or other
business partner .
Extranet is an Intranet for outside authorized users
using same internet technology.

Inter-organizational information system.

enable outsiders to work together with companys


employees.

Disadvantages

The suppliers & customer who dont


have technical knowledge feel problem.
Faceless contact.
Information can be misused by other competitors.
Fraud may be possible.
Technical Employees are required.
