Vocal Medium
The oldest and still most popular of all
instruments is the HUMAN VOICE. It is
the most personal and direct of all
instruments as it comes from with in
the body. The song projected by human
voice is the most natural form of music.
Male voices
male voices have
three registers:
bass (lowest),
baritone
(middle), and
tenor (highest).
The lowest of the
male local
registers is the
basso profundo.
Female voices
female voices also
have three
registers: alto
(lowest), mezzo
soprano (middle),
and soprano
(highest). The
highest of the
female vocal
registers is the
coloratura soprano.
Human voice
It is the most expressive of all the
instruments. It is Mans first
instrument. Tones are produced by
the vibrations of vocal chords in the
voice box (larynx) resonating in the
cavities of the chest, mouth and
nose.
Classification of Voice
Soprano is the highest of all vocal pitches. It is sung by
females.
Alto or Contralto is just below soprano and also sung
by females.
Tenor is the highest pitch for a male voice.
Bass is the lowest pitch in a chorus and sung by males.
Mezzo-soprano is the pitch in between soprano and
alto.
Baritone is the pitch in between tenor and bass.
Instrumental Medium
An instrumental is a musical
composition or recording without
lyrics or vocals.
Instrumental medium pertains to the
different instruments played by
musicians.
String
Instruments
Are musical instruments that produce sound from vibrating
strings.
Two classifications are bowed and plucked.
Bowing method used in some string instruments,
including the violin, viola, cello, and the double bass. The
bow consists of a stick with many hairs stretched between
its ends and causes a stick-slip phenomenon that makes
the string vibrate.
Plucking method used in playing string instruments,
such as the banjo, ukulele, guitar, harp, lute, using a finger
or a plastic plectrum (pl. plectra) to pluck the strings.

Wind instruments
Wind instruments are musical instruments that contain a
resonator (usually tube) in which a column of air is set into
vibration by the player blowing into a mouthpiece.
Two classifications are brass and woodwind.
Woodwind instruments change their pitch by changing
where the air escapes. They use a wooden reed to form the
mouthpiece.
Brass instruments change their pitch by changing the length
of the tubing which the air passes through. They do not having
any moving parts that vibrate to produce the sound, and they
are also called labrosones, meaning lip-vibrated instruments.

Percussion instruments
Percussion instruments are musical instruments
sounded by being struck or beaten.
Two classifications are pitched percussion and
unpitched percussion.
Pitched percussion have definite pitch, such as
xylophones and glockenspiels, while
Unpitched percussion have indeterminate
pitch and maintained rhythm, such as cymbals
and maracas.

Keyboard instruments are musical
instruments played using a keyboard.

Ensemble music is music rendered
by a group of performers singers
and/or players of musical
instruments.
Orchestra
An orchestra is the most spectacular
of the ensembles because of its large
size. Usually performing under
direction of a conductor, the
musicians playing several
instruments.
Symphony Orchestra
A symphony orchestra is a large
ensemble composed of about 100
players. It includes all the principal
instrumental types divided into four
sections or four basic ranges:
soprano, alto, tenor, and bass.
Concerto
The concerto is a form written for an
orchestra in which one solo
instruments, for example, a piano or
a violin, is given prominence.
Band
A band is an instrumental ensemble having
the size of an orchestra but consisting mainly
or exclusively of wind and percussion
instruments. Nowadays, a band is used to
mean a small group of performers, consisting
of a soloist, drummer, guitarist/s, and
keyboardist, or a small group of singers.
Rondalla
A Rondalla is a band usually
composed of stringed instruments. It
is the best-known instrumental group
in the Philippines today.
The Conductor
A conductor is someone who leads
and guides an orchestra or a group of
singers in order to perform a piece to
the best of their abilities. Conductors
work in theater or stage plays, film or
TV scores, lead orchestras and choirs
that are either amateurs or pros.
